The recent elevation of an Anglican priest to the post of Bishop has sent shockwaves through the Anglican Church, not to mention stunning the true Church -- those Christians of all denominations who put their trust in Jesus Christ alone for their salvation.

It made headlines world-wide, like; "Kenya's Anglican Church Angered by Consecration of Homosexual Bishop in US" (VOA) and "Asian Anglicans Dismayed at Election of Homosexual Bishop" (Cybercast News Service).

The chief argument used by BOTH sides is the Bible, specifically the prohibitions against homosexuality in Leviticus 20:13. The relevant verse is divided in half by the debaters, with those opposed to the elevation of Gene Robinson to bishop quoting the first half, and those who favor it quoting the second half.

The relevant verse says; "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."

The moment a Christian notes that homosexuality is an abomination, the other side notes that the Bible commands them to be put to death. Does anybody truly believe that should be the case? That rather than promoting him to bishop, we should just take him outside the city walls and stone him to death?

It seems a difficult question, but not so difficult, really. It is all in the way you frame the argument.

Pretty much everybody except homosexuals and a brainwashed few who haven't given it any serious thought already know that there's something a bit weird about homosexuality.

Attempting to 'prove' there is something wrong with it by quoting Leviticus 20 is self-defeating on two levels. The first one is that if you have to CONVINCE somebody that homosexuality is wrong, you are going to need more than that.

You are either talking to a homosexual or a liberal. In either case, they are unlikely to be persuaded by an argument that suggests homosexuals should be put to death.

The Church is not subject to the Old Testament Law. I think a better argument is Romans Chapter 1:22-32 and 1 Corinthinans 5:1-13 -- combined with common sense. Give a little thought to what homosexual sex actually is. Then give a little thought to the way God designed our bodies. Add to that the way God designed the human race to reproduce.

As my son asked me (when he was 12) "Dad, what part of this don't they understand?"

Insofar as the bishop's elevation is concerned, if the Bible is to be the guide, he doesn't qualify on several levels, according to 1 Timothy 3:2.

A bishop must be 'blameless' meaning the allegations made against him last week disqualified him. Such allegations would not have surfaced in the first place if not for the 'bishop's' lifestyle.

A bishop must not be self-willed. (Titus 1:7) This guy was willing split his church to get his own way. He disqualified himself.

A bishop must be the husband of one wife. This guy is the husband of one husband. And, he has an ex-wife and a couple of kids kicking around in his background. He is disqualified again.

A bishop must be vigilant. If Robinson couldn't see what his openly homosexual lifestyle would do to his church, he falls short of the Biblical job description here, as well.

A bishop must be 'as the steward of God'. What kind of stewardship does splitting a church in half represent to you?

It has become culturally fashionable to accept homosexuality as a normal, alternative lifestyle, and cultural fashion tends to be reflected in churches. In many American churches, for example, drinking alcohol is looked on as sinful, where the same denominations in Italy find no problem with drinking wine, whereas in Germany, beer is the culturally acceptable beverage.

But there is a difference between drinking wine and ordaining a homosexual as bishop. An important difference. It is a matter of Bible doctrine.

The Bible says drunkenness is a sin, and since beer or wine can lead to drunkenness, some churches equate the two as the same, where others do not. Paul wrote to Timothy: "Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities." (1 Timothy 5:23) So this is an issue of interpretation based on culture, not doctrine.

The Bible's doctrinal position on elevating Gene Robinson to the bishopric is that he doesn't qualify. He wouldn't qualify if he weren't a homosexual, but he ESPECIALLY doesn't qualify because he is.

Paul writes, "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry." (2 Timothy 4:3)

It is difficult to comment on the whole homosexual thing because it is so hard to differentiate between hating the sin and loving the sinner. And I don't want to sound strident or shrill -- the Word of God is too important to be marginalized by coming across as a wild-eyed fanatic.

Unfortunately, the culturally acceptable position is that anyone who says the Bible condemns homosexuality is preaching hate, and not love. God loves the homosexual, but condemns homosexual conduct.

Why is that such a big deal? God also condemns heterosexual 'conduct' outside the boundaries of marriage. That doesn't mean He hates heterosexuals. Neither does it mean that I hate heterosexuals by saying the Bible opposes premarital or extra-marital sex.

The whole 'hate-mongering' argument is just spin designed to make up down and black white so nobody will mention the obvious.

A divorced man openly cohabitating with a girlfriend would not qualify to elevated to the bishopric of the Anglican church, either.

That is, if the Bible is to be considered as having any authority over the Church.

Paul also wrote to Timothy that, "in the last days perilous times shall come. . . For men shall be lovers of their own selves . . . lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God . . . Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof . . . Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. . . (2 Timothy 3:1-5)
