Godlessness in the Last Days (Part One)
Prophecy - Signs
Wednesday, April 28, 2010
Back in January, Jack wrote an excellent article about America being the world’s most Christian nation titled “The World's Most Christian Country.” He identified several Scripture references as to how the Last Days were relevant to America, and most importantly, why they were relevant to America at this time in history.
“Without some sense of context, 2nd Timothy 3:1-7 can refer to anything -- and thereby signify nothing.
“That is not logical. 2nd Timothy 3:1-7 clearly refers to a Church Age Christian society in decline in the last days. Paul begins saying, ‘This know also, in the last days perilous times shall come.’
“It is just as obvious that, for it to be prophecy, it would have to refer to a recognizable society in existence in the last days. If not, how would anyone be able to discern its fulfillment?”
After he wrote the article, I mentioned that he should expand on how America fits 2nd Timothy 3:1-7 so precisely. Since the daily (no wait, hourly) news has given Jack plenty of material, I figured I would take a stab at demonstrating how well modern-day America lines up with the signs Paul outlined for Timothy.
2nd Timothy 3:1-5 reads: “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”
Since this one paragraph could give me many weeks’ worth of articles, I am breaking this into two parts. The first part will cover men being lovers of their own selves through trucebreakers. The second part will cover false accusers through having a form of godliness.
Men being lovers of their own selves is really not a new concept. However, the degree to which men love themselves has increased exponentially. They put their own needs or desires above everything else or above anything else.
This is evidenced by big corporations who put the CEO’s and board members’ salaries above their employees’ salaries or well-being or customers. Even though most recently it happened with the Banks and Wall-Street, other huge corporations like GM, Ford, AT&T and Western Electric had several lay-offs during the 80’s & 90’s.
Other examples of “me-first” attitudes can be seen in individuals who think they are entitled to certain benefits because they think they earned it; or of some wrong that’s been committed against their ancestors in the distant past; or just because they’re American.
Then, you have America’s mainstream youth. They are so selfish and used to getting their own way they think that everything is owed to them without having to work for it. “You have to pass me in school, just because I attend it;” or “I deserve a car, computer, etc.”
These self-loving attitudes lead into covetous natures. People want the new iPod, the latest and greatest computer, or flat-screen TV’s. Advertisements are riddled with “the things you have to have.”
Boasters are next on the list. Have you ever heard someone go on and on about their vacation home in the Bahamas or the yacht? What about all of their accreditations or certifications? Perhaps, you have boasted yourself; where it has been taught to be completely acceptable; like say, in a job interview? You have to boast about your admirable skills in order to show you’re worthy of the job.
The next attribute involves being proud. Proud here means arrogant. All you have to do is look at our current Congress or the President to see these qualities. It can also be seen with some scholars or other people of stature. Because they’re an expert at something, they deem themselves experts on every topic; thus, they think they can dictate how one should lead their own live and what’s in their best interests based on their own personal experience.
Our current Administration could fall under the category of a blasphemer as well. In fact, the Political Correct Movement of the government and the mainstream media could fit nicely in this grouping. They are so eager to make everyone in the country feel accepted and not excluded, they ignore the majority of the Christian population and feel no shame in denouncing Christian beliefs or values.
Next on the list comes disobedient to parents. When I was young, I used to think my generation was pretty disobedient to parents. The mainstream youth of today put my generation to shame. Never before have I seen so many children willfully disobey their parents in all my life. Youths talk back to their parents at younger ages and this behavior is encouraged by the media and entertainment industries. Obama’s Administration even has commercials featuring youngsters saying they had to coach their parents on important issues and how to vote.
Unless you are Born Again, America is more unthankful than ever. Many people take for granted that they have a roof over their heads, plentiful food, hot baths and soft beds.
Unholy is the next characteristic listed. Where to even begin on this one? How about the definition of what is Holy? Holy is defined by the Encarta dictionary as consecrated - dedicated or set apart for religious purposes; or saintly - devoted to the service of God. Many people cannot get past the devotions to themselves let alone devoting something to God. They are consumed with worldly vices instead turning their heart towards God.
Next is without natural affection. The common belief behind this attribute is that it means unloving. When people love themselves first and foremost, it is hard to put anyone else’s needs above their own, let alone God’s. This can be seen with the increased crime and murder rate as well as with legalized abortions.
Finally, we close with trucebreakers for Part One. A trucebreaker here is someone who is unforgiving. I have seen first-hand how destructive being unforgiving can be to a person. It makes them bitter and lonely because they can’t let go of how “they were wronged.” They can carry that resentment with them to the next relationship and it creates a negative impact. Dr. Phil and other talk-show hosts have a plethora of material because of all of these damaged souls that cannot forgive others.
Stay tuned for Part Two.
