Godlessness in the Last Days (Part Two)
Witnessing Tools

Rebecca Droeger

Last week, we discussed Godlessness in the Last Days, and how it is extremely relevant to the current time.  The particular verses we referenced were 2nd Timothy 3:1-5.

2nd Timothy 3:1-5 reads:

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents,  unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.”

Part One last week covered the attributes of men being lovers of their own selves through trucebreakers.  This second part covers false accusers through having a form of godliness.

America has no short supply of false accusers.  It has become an art-form in American politics.  If one side disagrees with the other, the opposition will usually become demonized, marginalized; or if all else fails, falsely accused.  For instance, if someone disagrees with the President on any policy, many commentators slap a racist label on the opposing individual.

Celebrities have exclaimed that the whole purpose of the Tea Party Movement resulted from racism as if it were a fact.  The celebrities did not say it as if they were speculating as to why Tea Partiers disagreed with the President; they actually accused the Tea Partiers of vicious racism.

Even the media have painted the members of the Tea Parties as angry mobs on the verge of violence.  They claim the group had racially charged signs, spat on black members of congress, or shouted profanities at an openly gay congressman.  All of the charges have zero proof, but it does not stop them from printing the sensational accusations.  They do not care if the information is false as long as it has the appearance of wrong-doing.  It gives them the benefit of playing the victim in order to Jedi mind-trick the public into taking pity upon their efforts.

Other examples of false accusers can easily be found in Tabloid magazines.  Many will print sensational stories to sell more copies whether the story is completely fabricated or only partially true.  Lately celebrities have won some lawsuits as a result of the false information printed by the magazines.  Even though the celebrities won the lawsuits, some of the reputations are so significantly damaged that they have had difficulty regaining sponsors or public support because their image was tainted.

Paul tells Timothy another attribute of the Godlessness in the last days involves incontinence.   Incontinence here does not have to do with bladder control, but rather a lacking of self-control.  Whether people really have less self-control than what we witnessed in the past or we just happen to hear about it more now because it’s splattered all over the news, in entertainment, or whether people talk more openly about it; lack of self-control has become an epidemic.

For some, lust could be their vice.  They could either not be able to control their thoughts, or they could not control their actions.  Look at Tiger Woods, John Edwards or Bill Clinton.

For others, it could be gambling, drinking, smoking, swearing, overeating, or any other excess imaginable.

Another attribute of the Godlessness in last days pertains to those who are fierce.  Mike Tyson comes to mind when he bit of Evander Holyfield’s ear.  Granted, the example is way over the top, but the visual just shows how vicious and animalistic some people have become.

The accelerated gang violence at the Mexican border comes to mind as well.  So many murders and grizzly atrocities have been committed by these gang members that US has advised against travel to certain Mexican territories.

Despisers of those that are good is another prime example of our increased Godlessness.  Those seeking to do good are often accused of hate nowadays.  Some are ridiculed, and others are outright attacked.  The liberal media, groups like the ACLU, celebrities and government officials often mock those who do good.  These groups will paint do-gooders in a bad light by saying that the do-gooders are trying to suppress the rights of others for their own purposes.

Traitors and treachery abound in America.  The current Administration alone could provide enough examples of this attribute that I could write several novels and still not cover all of the treacherous activities they have done.  Turning their back on Israel, not honoring the majority of Americans’ wishes, not paying their taxes, and not honoring the Constitution are just a few examples of what this government has done.

Although the government has given us plenty of instances of being heady (reckless) lately, many corporations, financial intuitions and Americans have been reckless as well.  Some examples include out-of-control spending, relationships, marriages or taking care of one’s own self.

High-mindedness in these last days has become absolutely ridiculous.  High-mindedness is another word for conceited.  The most prominent figure in the United States is the President, and he is the most visibly conceited individual I can think of.  Not a day goes by where he is not speaking on TV, in an article, or defending his self-important views upon the world.

Other individuals fit in this category as well.  I personally know several conceited people, but I also know more public ones as well.  Whether it’s an act, or if they actually think this way, but some celebrities that come to mind include Bill Mayer, Katie Couric, and Oprah.  These individuals put on the persona that they seem to know everything; will interrupt their guests, and snarkly talk down any opposition.  The word “pompous” comes to mind when thinking about them.

Next to last on the list comes lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.    In fact, whole industries have been built around pleasure.  The porn industry comes to mind.  Seeking sexual pleasures have often handicapped man.  They get so fired up; they just have to have it.  When putting the desire above God and how he wants you to relate sexually to your special partner, it becomes a real problem.

Not only that, but our society always seems to be pursuing having all the pleasures of life:  lavish vacations, spa treatments, less time at work, playing sports or video games, watching movies or having no pain.

Humans, in general, will do just about anything to avoid pain; but it seems like our society could not function without happy pills, pain pills, or anti-anxiety pills.  I often wonder what we did before these inventions were made and how we coped.  I’m sure many people prayed; but eventually, they sought the pleasure above the relationship with God; and I must admit, I have tried the “easy” way out in taking these medications on what was supposed to be a temporary basis.  Unfortunately, ceasing to take them once you have been on them for awhile is not an easy feat.

Last on the list is having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof.  Humanists, Atheists and many self-important people fit in this category.  Some believe they are above a god.  Others believe they are doing godly things in their own minds when they’re actually only serving themselves.  They put themselves above all other people and want to be seen as righteous, when all they’re really doing is seeking power.  Nancy Pelosi, Barrack Obama, Harry Reid and Oprah all fit into this category.

When going over how well America fits Paul’s description of Godlessness in the Last Days, we can see how near the hour is for Christ’s return for His Church.  Otherwise, looking at this list can be a downer because of how far America has sunk.  Praise be to God we will not be here much longer!

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

“Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

“Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18).
