Perspective on the News

Rebecca Droeger

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with everyday news nowadays?  With 24/7 news coverage along with the overabundance of material to report, the stories can often burden the public with a sense of hopelessness and dread.

Unfortunately, with all of the tricks the current US administration is pulling, you can’t help but stay on alert for fear of falling asleep at the switch.  I feel like if I do not watch the news every single day, I’ll wake-up and my country won’t exist anymore.

Remember the good ole’ days when you would scour the headlines, looking for anything that would point to the Rapture being around the corner?  Now it seems that I have trouble finding a story that doesn’t relate to the End Times prophecies.

Before the election of the current Administration, I was under the impression that God might Rapture us out of here before the US took a back seat to the rise of the Revived Roman Empire.  I never would have suspected that our country would ever have people in power that would consider transforming our Nation into a socialistic government.  I incorrectly assumed that we would go out on top.

Honestly, I do not know what made me think that we were so special.  Even though we are known as a predominately Christian nation, the overall degeneration of morals in our society should have made me realize that the whole time-line of the Rapture does not necessarily center on what happens in the US.  While what happens here can be a good indicator of the signs of the times, it would all mean nothing if Israel had not become a Nation in 1948.

Therefore, it would not be surprising if the citizens of the United States experience troublesome times before the Rapture.  In fact, Paul cited these times as a warning specifically in 2nd Timothy 3:1 “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.”

Paul went on to characterize the Western civilization as we know it “For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,  traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God…” (2 Timothy 3:2-5).

While Paul could have described any unbelieving nation as having attributes mentioned in his letter to Timothy, it really wouldn’t be a warning unless it was characterizing those professing belief in Christ.  As Jack has mentioned before in his daily briefings in the past, this warning pertains to a nation that predominately identifies itself as a Christian.

So, what do we do when we feel helpless and overwhelmed by the daily news?  Praying to God seems to be the obvious answer; but what should we pray for?  After all, everything works towards the good and glory of God and no matter what we do.  “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”  (Romans  13:1 )

God’s plans will take place whether we are actively trying to die keeping this Nation free or if we succumb to no longer being a sovereign land.

The question then becomes, “what’s the use?”  When we get to this point, it is a good idea to step back, unplug, and talk with God through prayer.

While we have a day devoted to worship, we should also set aside time where we step away from the news, television and technology.  Utilizing a portion of this time to communicate with God can heal the soul, provide direction, and give you strength.

For example, my husband has worked ghastly amounts of overtime within the last few months.  Plus, he has all of the daily duties he keeps up with at home; and he has huge projects in the works for keeping our home safe.  This weekend, we went on a camping trip with our congregation.  Even though he had to put up the tent and pack most of our gear, he was so refreshed by getting away from the busy life at home and work.

He was able to swim, play volleyball, fish, sit by the campfire, play corn-hole, go canoeing, picnic and worship with our family and friends.  For the first time in months, I saw him relax and let go.  For the first time in my life, I witnessed him really put all of his soul into the worship service.

Amazingly, the sermon was about relying on God to take care of all of your troubles and the world’s.  The leader had us take a balloon and puff air into it every time he said something that we would get stressed out about.  Some of the stressors on the list included money, work, getting stuck in traffic, arguing with loved ones, and a whole list of daily obstacles.

Many balloons burst from the weight we put into it from our air.  The ones that didn’t, he had us let go and watch the balloons float and shrink away through the air.  He gave us a visual aid of what it feels like to let God take care of those daily pressures.

The enemy continues to chip away at our Holy armor until we feel defenseless and useless.  This is why it is so very important to follow the guidelines of Ephesians 6:12-17 by putting on the whole armor of God.

The way to start can be found in Ephesians 6:18 through prayer “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”

Unfortunately, we often start off our prayers centered on our needs instead of praising the Lord for His blessings.  Instead of leading off with our focus on us, thanking God will put the focus back where it belongs, on God.  This way, we are looking to God for the answers instead of satisfying our own needs.

Being thankful is not always an easy task when the weight of the world is crashing down all around you.  If you’re having a really difficult time of thinking how God has blessed you lately, just remember He gave you the ultimate gift of Salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

Sitting back and letting God take control of the future is no easy task.  As Americans, we were taught to fight for our freedom and not sit idly by while someone poses a threat to our liberties.  Working hard for a living or something you believe in is supported by Scriptures in the real-life analogy Jesus cited when talking about the kingdom of Heaven in Matthew  25:23 “His Lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”

So, how do we abide by God’s Word; knowing that He has an ultimate plan regardless of what we do, yet not sit by and let our freedoms be destroyed?  We do so by prayerfully asking for guidance from our King and raising our voices in opposition to the oppressors within the boundaries of the law of the land (while we’re still allowed to do so).  Keep writing letters to your congressmen, continue attending peaceful rallies, support public figures that question politicians and hold them accountable, and pray that God allows you to continue to enjoy the liberties He has so graciously given to you; and use those liberties to spread the Good News.
