When Did the ''Word'' Become the Word?
Commentary on the News
Thursday, August 05, 2010
Rebecca Droeger

In an address on May 6, 2010, Nancy Pelosi remarked that her favorite word was “the Word.”  She remarked “That is everything.  It says it all for us.  And you know the Biblical reference; you know the Gospel reference of ‘The Word.’”

Speaker Pelosi goes on to say “We have to give voice to what that means in terms of public policy that would be in keeping with the values of ‘the Word.’…so, but of course we know it means the word was made flesh and walked among us.”

Nancy was attempting to appeal to Christians by alluding to the Gospel of John and to point to Jesus Christ as the Word that was made flesh.

On Glenn Beck’s show on August 4, 2010, he shows a reporter following up to Nancy Pelosi’s remarks about “the Word.”  In a July 29, 2010 press conference, the reporter asked Speaker Pelosi “When was the Word made flesh?  Was it at the Annunciation, when Jesus was conceived by the Power of the Holy Spirit as the Creed says, or was it at the Nativity when He was born of the Virgin Mary?  And when did the Word get the right to Life”

Ms. Pelosi became very defensive and twitter-pated by the question and answered with “whenever it was when we bow our heads when we talk about it in church, and that’s where I’d like to talk about that…”

Mr. Beck so eloquently brought up the fact that when Nancy first brought it up, it wasn’t at Church, so she effectively dismissed the question about when life begins by deflecting the question with an obscure answer.

So, when was the Word made Flesh?  The exact reference in the Bible can be found in John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

Well, to really get the answer, the reader should start at the beginning of the Gospel of John where he lays out where and when the Word originated:

John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Technically speaking, since God always was the Word, and the Word came from God, He ordained our entire existence before our human timeline even existed.

Many people argue as to when life begins based on life as it progresses in the womb.  Some will say it starts at conception; others will say it starts when the baby has a heartbeat; still, others argue that life does not begin until the infant is out of the womb.

According to the Word itself, life starts before it is conceived:

Psalms 139:4-6 “For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.  Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.  Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.”

Psalms 139:13-15 “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.  I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.   My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.”

Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

So, if Nancy Pelosi wants to make laws of the land and principals to live by according to “the Word,” then I suggest she study it more carefully before attempting to quote from it or to claim to make public policy based on it.  Does the word “hypocrite,” come to mind?
