Bill vs. Bill
Israel - Middle East

Rebecca Droeger

Last week, commentator Bill O’Reilly had self-acclaimed comedian and agnostic Bill Maher on his show to find out why Mr. Maher held such disdain for people of faith.  The interview left me so furious and upset that I actually stormed out of the room.

Rarely has something made me so angry that I have had to walk away; especially a TV show.  In fact, I cannot recall a time that I actually have stomped out of a room swearing at the television.

The frustration I felt actually made me say “that’s it!  I’m done.  I’m finished with this World and anything to do with it.  I’m not watching TV anymore and I’m not going to have anything to do with what the World has to offer!”

After a few minutes, the Holy Spirit slapped some sense into me and I realized “how am I going to be an effective witness if I check out?  Besides, how am I going to combat the enemy if I do not know his tactics?”

So, after I cooled off, I rewound the program and watched the interview in its entirety.

During the conversation, Bill O’Reilly asked Bill Maher why he held so little regard for people of faith.  Bill Maher cited that conservatives and believers “are morons.”  Bill Maher stated religion requires a person to forego logic and is a purposeful suspension of critical thinking.

Bill Maher exclaimed that 60% of the American people “actually believe” the Noah’s Ark story to be true.  Then, he went on to say that Christians see the Bible as the Holy Word of God.

What made me so angry was not just Bill Maher’s contempt for people of faith; I could have handled that.  It was Bill O’Reilly’s response that infuriated me.  Bill Maher asked why so many people believed in the Bible when the stories were “untrue.”  O’Reilly responded “because it’s allegorical Bill.”

I thought “what?  O’Reilly is speaking on behalf of Christianity on National Television, and he’s saying the Bible is allegorical???”

Maher responds with “well, some people believe it to be literal.”  Then, Maher follows up with a baited question designed to put the Believer on the defensive.  Maher asks “well what about the part of the Bible that says you should kill your neighbor if he’s working on a Sunday?”  Maher goes on to ask “is that a Parable or is that literal?”

O’Reilly’s response was not much better.  O’Reilly said “I do not know that Parable,” and proceeded to ask where Maher retrieved it from the Bible.  Maher said it was, he thought, from Deuteronomy.

O’Reilly then went on to say that he (O’Reilly) is a Christian and the New Testament is what he believes in.  Maher protested and said the Bible was written by God; then O’Reilly said, NO.  It was written by prophets and Matthew, Mark, Luke and John:  real human beings.

Maher went on to ask if the Bible was inspired by God “why is it so wacky or immoral?”  Then, he cited the killing the neighbor bit again.

At least O’Reilly said that he didn’t know of any Christians or Jews killing their neighbors because they saw them working on a Sunday.

So, Bill squared really caused me some grief last week.  I couldn’t believe the agnostic was actually defending the Bible as the Word of God while the “Christian,” was claiming it as allegorical.

Needless to say, I wound up praying for both Bills and asking for God’s forgiveness for my nasty reaction.

Even though I realize that not every Christian holds to the inerrancy of the Bible and that many exist who hold O’Reilly’s belief that some of the Bible is allegorical, it made me cringe to actually hear this “testimony,” on such a popular cable network show.

O’Reilly did recover somewhat; but it still made me shake my head.

My point is not to pick on Bill O’Reilly or his show; but to show how America is further degenerating into the Church of Laodicea.

In Revelation 3:14-17, Jesus revealed to John the Church of the latter days as one that was lukewarm towards the Word of God.

And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.

So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of my mouth.

Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked

Even though we have provided many examples of how America as a whole fits the description of the Church of Laodicea, we now have seem to have official spokesmen on popular cable network shows professing its faith.
