Hezbollah’s Tentacles
Israel - Middle East
Friday, July 22, 2011
Alf Cengia

In a past installment I’ve made mention of the existence of Hezbollah operations in South America.  I linked to a website called smallwarsjournal.com that featured a 2010 report by Cyrus Miryekta.  In the very first paragraph of the report, Miryekta claims that Hezbollah has already infiltrated significant areas:

“Hezbollah, Lebanon‘s Iran-sponsored Shi‘i Muslim terrorist organization, has established global networks in at least 40 countries. Its growing presence in South America is increasingly troublesome to U.S. policymakers, yet there are few experts on Hezbollah and fewer still on Hezbollah Latino America. Hezbollah‘s operatives have infiltrated the Western Hemisphere from Canada to Argentina, and its activity is increasing, particularly in the lawless Tri-Border Area (TBA) of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.” (Emphasis mine)

Miryekta appears to be someone who might have a clue about this sort of thing. The blurb on Small Wars Journal informs us that he’s a veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq an M.A. graduate in “Statecraft and National Security from The Institute of World Politics”.

Lest we forget, here’s a reminder about Hezbollah courtesy of Miryekta:

“…All of its deception, propaganda, and political warfare operations are different tactics used to achieve Hezbollah‘s political objectives. It is a terrorist organization that repeatedly uses atrocities to further its agenda. Hezbollah‘s most infamous terrorist attacks are the Beirut bombings of the Marine Barracks and U.S. Embassy in 1983, the kidnapping of U.S. citizens in Lebanon to trade in the Iran-Contra Affair, the bombing of the Israeli Embassy in Argentina in 1992, the Argentine Jewish Center bombing in 1994, and the Khobar Towers bombing in 1998.  They have conducted many smaller operations, kidnappings, firing rockets blindly into civilian centers, hijackings, and assassinations as well as a plethora of criminal endeavors. Since the early 1990s, Hezbollah has been very concerned with public and international opinion.  It has developed a well-oiled propaganda machine which has successfully blurred its image to the outside world. Because Hezbollah conducts propaganda and political warfare so well, using a two-pronged approach of coercion and persuasion, it has solidified much support in Lebanon, and is now vying for global opinion...”

According to Miryekta Hezbollah is so efficient at public relations and camouflaging its objectives that only five countries i.e. the United States, Israel, Australia, Holland, and Canada, have recognized them as a terrorist organization.

It is well aware that many of its dubious actions come under the scrutiny of the international community; hence it has also created a “social base” and welfare system of public services including schools, hospitals, clinics, community centers, mosques and a range of facilities. These welfare programs are touted over radio and TV.

During past conflicts with Israel it has set up missile launching equipment and operations near or within some of these centers. Then when “unscrupulous” Israeli military retaliated, Hezbollah has been able to adopt the perfect victim role.

A recent report from FrontPageMag reveals that Hezbollah is now operating in Mexico:

“A Tucson Police Department memo from September 2010 has been leaked onto the Internet by hackers, and it warns that Hezbollah has set up shop in Mexico. The terrorist group has linked up with the Mexican drug lords, and is even said to have a large arms stockpile in the country. Terrorist groups are looking at the raging drug war in Mexico as an opportunity to further their deadly ambitions.” (Emphasis mine)

Is it now a case of Mexibollah? I’m sorry - it’s not that funny really. In fact it’s deadly serious for those unfortunate to be living in the region.

The article continued to say that a member of Hezbollah had been arrested in Tijuana in July 2010. Another man (Jamal Yousef) arrested in New York City claims that there is a stockpile of assorted weaponry (including anti-tank weapons), presumably stolen from Iraq, now located in Mexico.

The police believe that Hezbollah has been training the drug cartels and supplying explosives. They strongly suspect that the recent car bombings had the Hezbollah signature written all over them.

On July 7, Roger Noriega warned congress that “Iran and Hezbollah will carry out an attack on the U.S. using their networks in Latin America.” He stated that:

“If our government and responsible partners in Latin America fail to act, I believe there will be an attack on U.S. personnel, installations or interests in the Americas as soon as Hezbollah operatives believe that they are capable of such an operation without implicating their Iranian sponsors in the crime.” (Emphasis mine)

Exacerbating the issue is the strong inference that al-Qaeda may also be infiltrating the area. One individual was arrested in Virginia for his links to an al-Qaeda affiliate in Somalia. He is suspected to have smuggled some 270 Somalis into the US via Mexico and the list goes on…

The article concludes that, since 2006, 35,000 lives have been lost in Mexico’s drug war. One chilling observation is that these drug cartels will collaborate as operatives for Hezbollah and/or al Qaeda. After all, don’t their methods of operation align with terrorism already?

I was very interested to read recently that an Australian Newspaper understands the network surrounding Hezbollah. Perhaps the Obama administration should pay attention. The paper notes that Assad has:

“…had his hands full in ruthlessly suppressing the democratic aspirations of his blighted people, it has been disclosed his regime is accelerating weapons supplies -- including missiles that bring Israel, Jordan and Turkey within range -- to Hezbollah terrorists in neighbouring Lebanon.”

It then correctly identifies that “Iran’s thumbprints” are all over the shipments to Hezbollah. It also claims that this makes Hezbollah “the most powerful non-state military force in the world”.

That’s scary!

Douglas Farah notes:

“The understanding of the structure of the Muslim Brotherhood has often been misunderstood in the United States, where it is often viewed as Egyptian organization. The international structure is largely ignored. It is also worth remembering (although it seldom is) that Hamas is, according to its own statutes-article 2-an organic part of the Muslim Brotherhood.”

The fact that the Muslim Brotherhood has links to Hezbollah and Hamas should be a concern. But it doesn’t appear to always be the case. The Obama administration (especially Hillary Clinton) seems to think (or hope) that the Muslim Brotherhood has had some sort of Damascus experience and is leaving its old ways. Referring to the MB she said:

"We believe, given the changing political landscape in Egypt, that it is in the interests of the United States to engage with all parties that are peaceful and committed to nonviolence."

Can a leopard change its spots?

Finally, Professor Jamsheed Choksy provides vital information we should all take note of in light of Hezbollah’s infestation of the Mexican region:

“Harakat al-Nahda al-Islamiyya (Islamic Renaissance Movement) in Tunisia and Al-Ikhwan al-Muslimin (Muslim Brotherhood) in Egypt, like Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, advocate creating Islamic states, acquiring atomic warheads, abrogating peace with Israel and diminishing American and European influence in the region. Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood thinks highly of "characteristics found only in the Islamic Republic of Iran" and hopes "Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia will be like that" according to Kamal al-Hilbawi, one of its leaders…”
