Happy Birthday Satan?
Witnessing Tools

Kari Velemirovich

It was a dark and stormy night; many moons ago that a child was born on Satan’s high holiday of October 31st.   All the ghouls and goblins rejoiced at another soul born into the world that they could mold and make into the witch that they hoped she would become.  Much to their dismay their Enemy had other plans.

Now that I have your attention.  October 31st is my birthday, daughter of Jack Kinsella Bible Prophecy expert and all around good preacher.  Go figure.

Halloween and I have never really gotten along.  I tried to be a good sport and embrace the fact that the Lord chose for me to be born on that day.  Honestly though it didn’t seem fair to my young brain.  Friends were always busy and being raised in a Christian home we didn’t give Halloween a lot of credence.  We dressed up and collected the candy but there were no big parties, or decorations or anything of that sort, so who would want to come out to just a plain old birthday party on Halloween?  I will tell you, very few.

I had a cake and presents and all the things you should have for your birthday but we’d better hurry up, because it was a busy, busy night.

Being the oldest I gave up on trick or treating pretty early, but my siblings worked it for all it was worth.  They would come home with their pillowcases filled then they would set to categorizing (after the parents had checked for tampering of course).

The categories were as follows.  Chocolate, chips, suckers, hard candy and Kari’s pile.  Kari’s pile had candy corn, taffy and any other candy that no one minded parting with.   Occasionally the younger ones would feel bad and throw in a chocolate bar.

“Happy Birthday, go get your own candy”

So sad, woe is me!

Fast forward to my first Halloween/birthday as a Mom.  Mike and I decided that rather than giving any importance to Halloween we would just let the kids know that it was Mommy’s birthday and leave it at that.  But then the doorbell would start ringing and we knew eventually we would have some explaining to do.  But that was later.

The first Halloween I remember that my kids recognized, was the year 2000. My son, Mikie went running to the door before I could get to it and was greeted by a sixteen year old with a scary mask and an ax.  For the rest of the night, every single time the doorbell would ring he would scream in terror.  Mike came home to get him and took him to work and away from ringing doorbells. I couldn’t wait for that special birthday to be over.

It was shortly after that we decided it would be a good idea to educate the children about the dangers of Halloween and what could do to get the Gospel out on this night when all the children were eager for whatever we would give them.  Tracks with candy that was the answer!  So we did that, for a few years.  “Doctrine was very important to their young minds”, I thought in my young mind.

A few Halloweens/birthdays later all my hard work and striving came to an end with a simple childlike question; “Mommy, how come you and Satan have the same birthday?”  Fabulous!!  So much for understanding doctrine.

It was then I realized that I had given the day more credence then it deserved.  I was fighting the wrong battle.

Halloween is the day that kids go around, cute as buttons in most cases, asking for candy and fully expecting to get it.  There isn’t any other day of the year that this is acceptable.  Perhaps, and I am only speculating here, God DID have that in mind for October 31st.   At the very least He isn’t surprised by Halloween.

“Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like Me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure:” (Isaiah 46:9)

Children are very special to the kingdom as Jesus tells us;

"Suffer the little children to come unto Me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:14)

Kids are celebrated, doted upon and expected on Halloween more than any other day of the year.  Suffer them!

We as Christians know the doctrine and the history of Halloween, but that kid has no idea unless you decide to tell him (and that is one scary story).

Can you hear it?

“Hey Mom, that Christian lady told me all about Satanism and the occult and now I am terrified of Halloween.”

The next sound may actually be the sound of you having your ‘bell rung’.  At least with all that blood you won’t need a costume.

When a kid comes to the door this may actually be their only opportunity to see a representative of Jesus in you, so we need to let them see Jesus and not the enemy.

“One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.” (Romans 14:5)

I have been persuaded, I will have my cake and my candy too, while rejoicing in the day that the Lord has made.
