Israel Is A Threat
Israel - Middle East
Friday, December 09, 2011
Alf Cengia

Yes, you read the title right.  Israel has nuclear weapons and has even threatened to use them. So Israel is a threat!  At least, that’s what self-styled “progressive and independent blogger” and radio host, Steve Lendman thinks.

I’m not sure even sure what Lendman’s definition of progressive is.  He was interviewed by RT over the news that Iran had shot down a United States spy drone.  He made a number of assertions and allegations regarding America’s aspirations to dominate the Middle East.

“Since the 1970s America has had a running on-and-off war with Iran, basically wanting to change the regime, to make it subservient to US interests, and Iran has the crazy notion that it believes it has the right to its own sovereignty, to run its own government, to conduct its own affairs, it doesn’t have to answer to Washington. Washington disagrees, and therein lies the conflict,”

In contrast to Israel, he claimed that there was no evidence that Iran was seeking nuclear weapons or that they threatened to use them.  He finished off by saying, “Let’s have a little bit of truth about what’s going on.”

Lendman’s “progressive” mind-set brings to my recollection a conversation I had with a very intelligent work colleague.  It took place some years after America had “invaded Iraq” and was talking about moving troops out.  My friend strongly disapproved of the “invasion” and that they did it to get control of the oil.

When I pointed out that they were moving out, sans oil, and were transferring autonomy to the fledgling Iraqi government, my friend could only stare blankly.  I could see his mind working.  He just knew he had to be right regardless of the inconvenient fact I confronted him with.  The conversation abruptly ended when he smiled and walked away.  I know that my point didn’t change his truth.

As Lendman suggested, let’s have a little bit of truth:

It’s remarkable to me that people need to be constantly reminded (assuming they don’t deny them in the first place) of the tragedies that have plagued Jews throughout history and leading up to the inception of the Israeli state.  Immediately after that event it has had to fight for survival following a number of unprovoked attacks on it by its Arab neighbors. The situation remains unchanged and the details have been well documented and often enough.

Others have noted Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s distaste for Israel.  Perhaps he was only venting when he said in Persian that Iran would "wipe Israel off the map."  Some “progressive apologists” rushed to Ahmadinejad’s defense by declaring that “it was just a mistranslation.”

However, as Middle East Forum (MEF) points out in response to one of those defenders, Michigan professor Juan Cole:

“But, the Islamic Republic's official English translation rendered the phrase "Israel must be wiped off the map," and the regime reiterated its English translation on billboards and murals.”

MEF follows up by cataloguing a number of other genocidal statements made by different Iranian officials.  But perhaps they were all mistranslations after all.  How about this infamous one by ex Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani:

"If one day … the Islamic world will be equipped with weapons available to Israel now … the employment of even one atomic bomb inside Israel will wipe it off the face of the earth but would only do damage to the Islamic world."

No doubt the more progressive and/or accurate Persian translation of that should have been, “Even though that naughty little Israel has atomic weapons we still love them just the same and we would never wish to harm them.”

Compelling evidence suggests that Iran’s ally Syria has also sought out nuclear weapons capability.  As one UK paper puts it:

“UN investigators have identified a previously unknown complex in Syria that bolsters suspicions the government in Damascus worked with Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of Pakistan's atomic bomb, to acquire nuclear weapons technology. The buildings in north-west Syria closely match the design of a uranium enrichment plant provided to Libya when Muammar Gaddafi was trying to build nuclear weapons under Khan's guidance...”

Speaking of politically unstable Pakistan, and nuclear scientist A Q Kahn, it is nothing short of miraculous that nuclear weapons haven’t yet fallen into the hands of terrorists. Or have they?

According to Carnegie Endowment for International Peace:

“The complete extent of Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan’s decades-long involvement in the illegal transfer of nuclear materials and technologies is not known. The details are submerged in Khan’s work over the past thirty years, which has included both the development of Pakistan’s uranium enrichment capabilities and a complex international network of experts, suppliers, and front companies that have aided Iran, Libya, North Korea, and potentially others.” (Emphasis mine)

The nuclear nightmare extends further than the Middle East.

Writing for Human Events, John Wohlstetter acknowledges the conflict between Pakistan and India and claims that the US cannot stop the nuclear proliferation in Asia. He notes that six of the fifteen Pakistani Nuclear sites have already been attacked by Islamists.

North Korea is also suspected of, “aiding Burma’s nascent nuclear program, according to Sen. Richard Lugar, one of the Senate’s top nuclear policy experts.” Burma, like the Syria-Iran arrangement, is useful in providing an “out-of-sight” locale for North Korea.

If Wohlstetter is correct about China’s “new nuclear weapons development” and that nations like Taiwan, Japan and South Korea can, very quickly, go nuclear in response to aggression or fear; then that paints a frightening picture.

No one has mistranslated Iran’s intentions – least of all Israel. The fact that Iran is supplying Syria and using it as a supply chain to deliver missiles and arms to Hezbollah and Hamas, pretty much sums the situation up.

While its genocidal enemies are quickly amassing advanced conventional missiles and weaponry, the only real advantage Israel currently enjoys is its nuclear arsenal.

Even a so-called progressive should be able to understand that.

Let’s also not forget the people who have to live under these regimes and who have no choice in who governs them.
