The Financial Plague
Perspective on the News

J.L. Robb

Plague [pleyg] noun: Any widespread affliction, calamity, or evil, especially one regarded as a direct punishment by God: a plague of war and desolation

While economic times at home seem dire, we’re livin’ on the East Side compared to other countries.  The U.S. would certainly be better off economically with pre-1993 expenses, before the first Islamic terror attack on the World Trade Center.  That one only killed six, but the plan was to bring down both towers and kill thousands.  The price of security went up, needless to say.

Eight years later, the 9/11 attacks that were inherited from the Clinton administration changed everything. World stock markets crashed, airlines had to be bailed out, intelligence agencies were expanded, security was increased at all large functions and the military had to be upgraded.

The world felt the impact and still does.

Post 9/11, the Bush administration fought hard for economic recovery, and things began to look rosy for a while; but wars and preemptive wars are expensive.  Rebuilding the CIA and FBI was expensive, and then there were those hurricanes that hit U.S. shores.

The Bush Administration dealt with 26 land-falling hurricanes, or 3.25 per year.  President Obama has only dealt with one, Irene, which hit the Northeast in 2011, or .33 per year.  These storms are very expensive.

And then there are the other world tragedies, from the Indonesian Tsunami to the Haiti Earthquake to the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami.

So what is going on with the world’s economies, and does the Bible say anything about a world economic crisis?

The Bible does have something to say on this matter; and Revelation mentions the extremely dire, financial straits that will be going on in the End Times.

"When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds  of wheat for a day’s wages, and six pounds of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!” Revelation 6:5-6 NIV

What does this mean?

The “Lamb” is Jesus, described as the “Lamb of God.”  When the third seal is opened, the third horse of the apocalypse appears in John’s vision and is black, the color that designates “famine.”

The horseman carries a set of “scales” or balances, showing on one scale the amount of work it would take to be able to eat, symbolized by the other scale with grain.

This quote indicates that in those times, the last days, the economy will be so bad that a man will work a whole day, 10-12 hours, in order to make enough money to buy 6 pounds of barley or 2 pounds of wheat.  That’s not much of an income!

Based on today’s prices, Revelation 6:5-6, would indicate a whole day’s labor in order to earn $ .20- $ .60.  A whole day’s work for sixty cents?  Could you feed your family on that?  Could you feed yourself on that?

1 bushel of wheat today: 60 pounds/$ 12.00 (about 20 cents/pound)

1 bushel of barley today: 48 pounds/$ 5.50 (about 11 cents/pound)

The color of the horse indicates famine.  There has always been famine since the beginning of mankind but is famine increasing?  That is the prophecy, that famine will greatly increase throughout the world.  Droughts and war cause famine.

Financial collapses are occurring in the world today: Germany, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, North Africa, Middle East, Asia… What do you think?  Is it a local epidemic or a global epidemic?

In the United States, the average person spends about 6% of his income to eat.  In many other countries, it takes 35% or more of earned income just to eat, for one person.  In North African countries, some spend 60% of their wages on food, for a single person.  Families are going hungry.

January 2011 saw the overthrow of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak, a longtime U.S. ally who also “tolerated” Israel.  Since then the natural gas pipeline from Egypt that supplies Israel and Jordan has been sabotaged thirteen times.  The militants blowing up the pipeline are not worried about how it affects the economies of Egypt, Jordan and of course, Israel.

As gasoline prices rise toward the Obama administration’s goal of becoming more European, the cost of everything goes up.

"Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe."  Mr. Steven Chu, September 2008 Wall Street Journal interview.

Steve Chu is now our Energy Secretary.  Figure that one out!

But why are the gasoline prices going up?  Unlike President Bush, the current administration has had virtually no hurricanes to contend with; and there have been no Gulf of Mexico storms or hurricanes to trash oil wells and slow production.  When Hurricane Ike hit the oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico, right after hurricanes Rita and Katrina, gasoline hit $ 3.00 a gallon, there were gas lines à la 1973, and the economy began its present collapse.  Now that it’s $ 4.00 a gallon and climbing, the economy is not recovering.

We get reports stating the economy is “turning around” and recovery is near.  Reality tells a different story.

The Apostle James had this to say about the end times financial plague:

"Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days.”  James 5:1-3 NIV

In the book of Revelation, Jesus explained to John, the writer, that in the end times, the economic systems of the world would collapse, and here are some of the reasons:

Famine, drought, wars, narcissism, roaring seas, earthquakes and storms. Plague and pestilence would cover the earth and wars would be prevalent everywhere.

Is that happening? I think so.

It was predicted 2000 years ago.
