Revelation  4 : 1
After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter.

Prophecy - Signs
Wednesday, April 11, 2012
Wendy Wippel

Another major earthquake (this one 8.6 on the Richter scale) hit Indonesia this morning, and even the heathen realize there is something unusual going on.  Satellite TV features prophecy nearly every night.  Even GreenTV got into the act the other night.  (That's a mystery to me.)

Even the network news has started asking Tim LaHaye for answers.

For His own sheep the end is not to be feared.  We will soon hear His voice:

"For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first." (I Thessalonians 4:15-16 NASB)

And as His own sheep who recognize His voice, we will follow Him:

"Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord." (I Thessalonians 4:17 NASB)

We are told to,

"Therefore comfort one another with these words." (I Thessalonians 4:18)

This event is the Rapture, obviously, and it is the starting gun for the seven years of Tribulation.

Right?

Actually, no.  That's a common misconception, but the Rapture is never set in any time frame.  It is forever imminent; meaning it can happen at any moment.

That's good news.

What Daniel 9 defines as the starting gun is actually the treaty that Israel makes with the antichrist:

"Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week." (Daniel 9:27 NKJV)

Wait a minute. The verse just says that the treaty is made with "the many".  That's pretty vague.

How do we know who that is?

For all we know it's the People of Walmart.  There's a lot of them.  Right?

Nope.  Actually the Bible tells us a whole lot more about that treaty than you may have realized.  And it says a lot of it in Isaiah 28:

"Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scornful men, Who rule this people who are in Jerusalem, Because you have said, “We have made a covenant with death, And with Sheol we are in agreement. When the overflowing scourge passes through, It will not come to us, For we have made lies our refuge, And under falsehood we have hidden ourselves.” (Isaiah 28:14 NKJV)

What does this passage tell us about the treaty?

First of all that it is made by the people who rule in Jerusalem-- Israel's leaders-- with the implied approval of the population.  Currently only 33% of the population are religious Jews, and less than 25% of the Knesset.  And of Israeli prime ministers, only Menachem Begin ever attended synagogue voluntarily.

So the stage is set.

With tragic consequences to come, as we see as the passage continues:

"Therefore thus says the Lord God…  I will make justice the measuring line, And righteousness the plummet; The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, And the waters will overflow the hiding place. Your covenant with death will be annulled, And your agreement with Sheol will not stand; When the overflowing scourge passes through, Then you will be trampled down by it. As often as it goes out it will take you; For morning by morning it will pass over, And by day and by night; It will be a terror just to understand the report.” (Isaiah 28:17 NKJV)

And then God issues a convicting warning:

"the bed is too short to stretch out on, And the covering so narrow that one cannot wrap himself in it ….Now therefore, do not be mockers, Lest your bonds be made strong; For I have heard from the Lord God of hosts,  A destruction determined even upon the whole earth." (Isaiah 28:20-22 NKJV)

The treaty that Israel makes with the antichrist impels God to issue a decree of destruction.  That's why the treaty marks the beginning of tribulation.

But why does that make God so mad?  That is also to be found in this passage:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic."

They should have remembered Psalm 27:

"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1 KJV)

They looked to another for salvation.

Jesus described the outcome of that decision in Matthew 12:

"The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.  Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation." (Matthew 12:42 NKJV)

Israel was driven out of Israel, and, as predicted, its people were driven from place to place finding no rest for their feet.  Now their house has been returned to them.

But their last state will be worse than the first.  Zechariah tells us that,

"And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. (Zechariah 13:9 KJV)

Two-thirds of the nation will die by the end of that seven years.  That's a hard lesson to learn.

What should Israel do?  Wait for the Lord.  Be strong and let their heart take courage.

"Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed." (Psalm 34:5 NASB)

Wait for the Lord.

Do you have something today that you need to trust God in?

I do, actually.  A big one.

Wait for the Lord. That's the lesson for all of us today.

"And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God." (Zechariah 13:9 NASB)
