A Cup of Trembling
In Defense of the Faith
Tuesday, June 26, 2012
Pete Garcia

''As long as what you are afraid of is something evil, you may still hope that the good may come to your rescue.  But suppose you struggle through to the good and find that it also is dreadful?  How if food itself turns out to be the very thing you can't eat, and home the very place you can't live, and your very comforter the person who makes you uncomfortable?  Then, indeed, there is no rescue possible: the last card has been played.'' -C. S. LEWIS, Perelandra

This once great nation we live in, had become at the cost of much bloodshed and personal sacrifice, the very pinnacle of mankind’s experiment in liberty and personal freedom.  No other nation in the history of nations shared what we have in a constitutional republic that guaranteed our rights and liberties not by a government of men, but by God our Creator.

Our wealth was legendary, our dreams limitless, and our military might a fearsome thing to behold indeed.  But like every other great nation and empire before us, we too have fallen prey to our own luxuries and false sense of security.  Many pray that God will restore this nation to its former greatness, but when exactly was that?  We look back with fondness as if only we could return to a simpler age, but the truth is, there has always been sin and violence in our nation.  The Divine Hand that once sheltered our nation has been withdrawn, and only the shadow of His retreat remains.

Religion Can’t Save Us

Where was the denominational church 150 years ago, when liberal humanists began infiltrating our seminaries and pulpits, sowing the seeds of corruption amongst generations of future ministers?  Why didn’t Christians then stand up and take these parasites out when they were more of a nuisance, than the existential threat they are today?  Remember how the deeds of the Nicolaitans, soon became their doctrine?

Tragically, we have within American ‘Christendom’ become comfortable with sin, introduced by something that is called incrementalism.  We prided ourselves in a false sense of knowledge that we were more enlightened than all those generations before us by what we were willing to tolerate, rather than what we would not.  Today, the denominational churches struggle with even the most basic, fundamental doctrines that used to be a self-evident, such as the inerrancy of Scriptures and the Deity of Christ.  Now churches are debating (and acquiescing) on whether homosexuals can be pastors and whether Bibles should even be re-written so not to offend Moslems.  Astonishingly, our nation is still considered by the rest of the world as a “Christian” nation, mainly because of the numbers of our citizens who claim one particular denomination or another, not because they are truly born again believers in Jesus Christ.

So as a “Christian nation”, where was the church in safeguarding our children’s future against the onslaught of Marxists propaganda such as atheism, political correctness, evolution, eugenics, and euthanasia that has been openly promoted in our public education system even unto this day?  A human isn’t a human made in the image of God anymore, but rather an evolved product of primordial pond scum who is here by happenstance.  Is there any wonder why as a society, have no issues turning a fetus from a human being into a ‘choice’?  If even the most innocent among us is fair game, then what does that say about the inner-city gang banger, or the random citizen who was unfortunate enough to have been in the wrong place, at the wrong time?  Is there any wonder why suicide is sky-rocketing amongst our soldiers when all they’ve ever been taught is that, we are here by accident, and there is nothing after this life?

Where has the church been in defending the institution of marriage?  Is it any surprise that homosexuals today seek to redefine what we as a society, have long since deemed disposable?  What leg does the American public have to stand on in the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) when over 50% of American marriages end in divorce?

Morality Can’t Save Us

The most moral, devoutly religious nation or people to have ever existed… crucified their Messiah, along with their Gentile overlords 2,000 years ago.  Our morality would not, and could not save us…because our righteousness could never even come close to what God said we would need to meet His perfect standard.  Our salvation rests solely in the man Jesus Christ, who as God, departed Heaven and robed Himself in flesh to live that perfect life that you and I could never do.

Hitler, Stalin and Mao…all wretched despots whose histories were written by the blood of their citizens…pale in comparison to ours.  The only difference being that our sacrifices are not laid on the altar of political ideologies or for the ‘motherland’, but rather on the altar of convenience.  Fifty million abortions later into our 39-year judicial redefinition of life in 1973, and we have placed plenty of innocent blood on our hands as a society.

I’m speaking mainly to those who think just because we are American’s, we’ve earned some special status in the grand scheme of things and have somehow replaced Israel as the ‘God’s Chosen Nation’ simply because we are the land of the free and home of the brave.  As a nation, we have some seriously flawed issues that God in times past, made examples of other nations as what not to do.  Why are we any different?  We have conquered and taken land (Indians), we’ve traded in slavery, and we’ve fought both just and unjust wars, only to become the world’s greatest exporter of every evil imagination possible.   Our morality is no longer based on the Word of God, but has become a moving target of moral relativism, based solely on the subjective whims of what has come into fashion at any given period of time.

Political Solutions Can’t Save Us

"And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed."  Genesis 12:3

"The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states," the president said…"The Palestinian people must have the right to govern themselves and reach their potential in a sovereign and contiguous state."  President Obama (source)

Our nation’s very political existence and prominence today is because of our support and standing with the nation Israel.  Had President Truman not supported Israel’s declaration of statehood back in 1948, I doubt very seriously we would be where we are as a nation today.  But each subsequent administration since Truman has acquiesced more and more to the Islamic nations on account of cheap oil, until we have our current administration that are all but rigging the geo-political landscape in favor Israel’s enemies.  According to the Scriptures, Israel will stand alone in the last days, and that is evident in that both Republican and Democratic administrations have begun pushing Israel harder and harder to come up with a peace plan that ALWAYS ends up dividing Israel and/or Jerusalem, and never any of Israel’s neighbors.  How does the promise God gave Abraham apply any less today, than it did 4,000 years ago?

For thus says the Lord of hosts: “He sent Me after glory, to the nations which plunder you; for he who touches you touches the apple of His eye.  Zechariah 2:8

Consider our blessings as a nation for standing by Israel all these years.  Now our blessings are not predicated on the number true Christians in our nation, as there are true Christians in every nation. The proof of my statement is in the fact that persecution against the Body of Christ exists all around the world.  Our blessings as a nation come from our willingness to stand with Israel, which fulfilled God’s plan for bringing them out of a 1900 year Diaspora into their own land.  Had our nation not sided with Israel, or if we come to some future arrangement when we turn our back against Israel, we too will break ourselves into pieces.  (Bill Koenig has done an excellent job chronicling all this up to this day)

How do I feel that we as a nation are racing toward the edge of a cliff?  It makes me sad, not because I want America to go back to what it was (which even at our best, still didn’t meet God’s standard), but because this whole tragedy is all so preventable, had we only taken God at His word.  Either we will reap judgment upon ourselves because of the worldly godlessness we so desperately seek to embrace, or because we are doing the one nation-ending-deed God promised us would happen when we start to mess with Israel.

"Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.  And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it."  Zechariah 12:2-3

Seeing that our nation is utterly headed in the wrong direction, and that our religion, morality, and political persuasions can’t save us anymore today than they could 100 years ago, what then should we as Christians living in the last days place our hope in?

"For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works." Titus 2:11-14
