War of the Elites
Perspective on the News
Monday, August 13, 2012
Ed DeShields

It’s political season and the elites are controlling the conversation once again.  Turn on any channel of your choice and just listen for anyone you think might be telling the truth.  You’ll be sadly disappointed.

Campaigns no longer exist to explain anything.  They’re made for negatively defining and dividing the electorate into soldiers of warring camps.

We’re defined as only as white, black, Republican or Democrat, red or blue, conservative or liberal, right or left, religious or secular, urban or rural, majority or minority.  Then there’s union, non-union, atheist, gay, racist or any other electorate sub-division.

There is no coincidence that these labels are used to describe us.  The elites stand alone to benefit from the divisions they promote.

Because to the winner go the spoils.

Take for example the case of unions.  A new study from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce finds that, when it comes to “threatening or disruptive behavior,” union members have voted themselves far more rights—or, at least, far more license—than their fellow Americans. The Chamber’s study, “Sabotage, Stalking, and Stealth Exemptions: Special State Laws for Labor Unions,” examines little known state laws that favor organized labor, even to the point of exempting union members from laws prohibiting “conduct that would otherwise be considered criminal activity.”

For example, in California, “making a credible threat to cause serious bodily injury to another, and then within 30 days thereafter entering the residence or workplace of the target” is punishable with up to a year in jail.  But the law also states that this prohibition "shall not apply to any person who is engaged in labor union activities."

Then there’s Wisconsin.  There, the statue defining sabotage states, “Nothing in this section shall be construed to impair, curtail, or destroy the rights of employees and their representatives to self-organization.”

The Pennsylvania legal code states that the prohibition on stalking “shall not apply to conduct by a party to a labor dispute.”

I’m not picking on unions.  If the elites can convince the rest of us that we are at each other’s throats, on the verge of civil strife, these elites can make us believe our own neighbors are our enemies and that we have nothing in common but our hatred of each other.

By herding us into these warring camps, by pitting us against one another, these elites can also distract us from the real forces tearing this society apart—the unaccountable, irresponsible political establishment that now presumes to govern in our name, with no concern for anything but its own interests.  By sowing these seeds of distrust, they divide and conquer, and for too long, they have succeeded.

The unaccountable allows the Treasury Department to order U.S. banks to prepare plans to sell off its businesses, or to find other funding sources if regular borrowing markets shut them out, and reduce risk.  The plans must be feasible to execute within three to six months, and banks are to "make no assumption of extraordinary support from the public sector," code for the government doesn’t have the money to bail you out again so we’re going to shut you down next time.

The unaccountable allows for the National Security Agency to build giant facilities in Utah that are alleged to hold all the electronic communication on Americans including their email, text and phone conversations – even as it is against the law to do so.

The unaccountable allows for an Executive Order to interrupt immigration enforcement if an alleged offender simple states he went to school in America.  No proof required.

The unaccountable allows the City of New York the leeway it needs to develop the Domain Awareness System, a sophisticated technology solution that aggregates and analyzes existing public safety data streams in real time, providing NYPD investigators and analysts with a comprehensive view of New Yorkers.

Says Mayor Bloomberg:

“This new system capitalizes on new powerful policing software that allows police officers and “other personnel” to more quickly access relevant information gathered from existing cameras, 911 calls, previous crime reports and other existing tools and technology.”

Who exactly are “other personnel”?

It allows our government to dramatically increase the percentage of people receiving some form or another of federal welfare to rise to nearly one-in-three or over 100 million of our citizens, according to a recent Congressional study.  If you consider Social Security or Medicare the number is one-in-two.

And as I explained in my article “Why Our Budget Cannot Be Balanced” every dime of this welfare is printed money – money we borrow each day to run our entire government operations.

Democracy has always been an argumentative way to run a society.  But it’s time to reject the notion the debate must come exclusively from the elites, including their deceptions, and we must deny the political class in Washington the power to assign us each to one or the other classes of people they can control.
