J.L. Robb

I tried to think of a few titles for this article and can’t really say the one I chose was my favorite.  It could’ve been headlined as:

  • Mayan Hysteria: December 21, 2012
  • The End is Near Again
  • The End: Coming Soon to a Neighborhood Near You
  • The End Is Near: December 21, 2012

Most of you know that I am an “up and coming” young author.  Ok, I guess at 65 the “young” part was a slight exaggeration; but then, 65 is the new 45 from what I’ve read. Oh yeah? Tell that to my spinal cord!

The end-of-the-world stories have always permeated through cultures and religions. Almost every religion has one.  Sometimes I would wonder if it was because the “world” as we know it, Planet Earth, had ended before; and the story was passed down until it would become a fable?  Then it would happen again.

I read a science article that seems to debunk the belief that there is only one universe, stating there may be as many as five.  I guess I never believed there was only a single universe; I mean, why would there be?  The article goes on to state that these universes sometimes collide.  My goodness, what a mess that would be.  The point is, everything seems to have an ending of some kind, in religions and in universes.

As my luck would have it, The End The Book: Part One came out in May, 2011, just in time for the predicted “rapture” on May 21.  I would have no chance to become a best-selling author, at least according to Harold Camping.  May 22 I woke up, pinched myself and thought I must not have made the cut.  What a relief it was to find out that Harold made a 5-month calculation error, so I thought I had 5 more months to prepare and sell lots of books.  Then October 21 came and went, and I was still here as were all my friends; so I figured I must hang out with heathens.

The latest end-of-the-world comes to us, not so much from the Mayans as from the purveyors of expounded-upon-stories, like journalists, marketeers and the media.  The Maya never said that December 21, 2012 would be the end as we know it, just that something dramatic and extraordinary would happen.  That was enough to get the rumors started.

Russian authorities are worried about it.  They are threatening radio and TV stations to keep them from reporting on the coming doom as predicted by the Maya, Nostradamus, Mother Shipton and the such.  Russian entrepreneurs are making a fortune using the doom and gloom for their benefit.  One guy is selling a survival kit for $ 27.00 that doesn’t even include a lighter or flashlight!

Russian bars and night clubs are riding the hysteria wave with specialty drinks, like “Total Recall.”

THE END THE BOOK By: J.L. RobbI wrote about it in Book Two:

Come Join Us for the Mother of All Parties

Mayan Martinis, Hopi Hops, Nostradamus’ Naked Mermaids

December 19-21, 2012 . . . until

THE END!!

End of the World Party at Romano’s in Phoenix

The news continued as Jeff gathered his thoughts. He would join Abe at the front in a while and navigate. Would he see the white churches and fields of daffodils! - The End The Book: Part Two, page 225

December 21, 2012 is “the end” of the 5,125-year Long-Count Mayan calendar.  Chinese and Russian citizens are buying up all the candles, the French are preparing to meet on a mountain top where they believe aliens will come to their rescue and Americans are buying special survival shelters. Really...

Though this coming apocalyptic prediction is not specific as to how it might happen, many of the believers blame Nibiru, also known as Planet-X which is certainly destined to collide with planet Earth, which would make the Earth another asteroid belt.  Then there is the coming crash of the comet and the giant solar storms.

According to Britain’s The Telegraph, American Ron Hubbard, a manufacturer of hi-tech underground survival shelters, has seen his business explode.

"We've gone from one a month to one a day," he said. "I don't have an opinion on the Mayan calendar but, when astrophysicists come to me, buy my shelters and tell me to be prepared for solar flares, radiation, EMPs (electromagnetic pulses) ... I'm going underground on the 19th and coming out on the 23rd. It's just in case anybody's right."

In the French Pyrenees the mayor of Bugarach, population 179, has attempted to prevent pandemonium by banning UFO watchers and light aircraft from the flat topped mount Pic de Bugarach - The Telegraph, December 7, 2012

While a significant percentage of the population seems to be getting more and more concerned as December 21, 2012 approaches, those who don’t watch the news channels, or Discover, History or Science Channels, may not have a clue at the predicted apocalypse that happens in eight days.  While many are taking the predictions seriously, many are not, especially in the resort industry where “End of the World” parties are planned, and some are already going on.  Since the Maya lived around Cancun, one can only imagine all the dollars pouring in. Sounds like a good excuse to go to the beach to me.

So is it going to happen?  Of course not, is my bet.  I wouldn’t sell the farm.  Will anything adverse happen?  Maybe.

December 21, 2012 is the first day in a new earth-cycle of 26,500 years, referred to as an “age,” the first day in 9,672,500 days that the planets will align the way they will align.  Actually, it’s not just the planets and includes the stars and the entire galaxy.  Each “age” consists of 5 cycles of 5,125 years each.

Will this gravitational pull have an effect on our planet?  I’m not sure and don’t think anyone could be sure.  Gravitational effect controls the ocean tides and probably has an effect on earthquake and volcanic activity. But is this the end?

When Jesus was asked by His Apostles, when the end of the age would be, this was His answer.

“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Mark 13:32 NIV)

His answer was clear.  No one knows the date of the end except God Almighty, the Creator of all things.  Jesus didn’t know and the angels didn’t know.  That means that the Maya, Nostradamus nor Harold Camping knew.  So why are there so many believers in the Mayan myth?  We have a tendency to believe mythology over truth.

Jesus did not leave the Apostles hanging though.  He gave them some precursors to the end-of-the-age event.

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24: 4-14 NIV)

There were other “signs of the times” given to the Apostles as a warning.

"There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.” (Luke 21:25 NIV)

Are any of these “signs” that were predicted thousands of years ago occurring today?  Are there any wars and rumors of wars going on now that are more extensive than in the past and are they around Israel, where the “final” war is predicted to occur?

Are the seas roaring and tossing today more than usual?  Are there signs in the sun, moon and stars?

The end of the world has been predicted for thousands of years, but Christians should never buy into predicted dates.  Some Christians thought the end would be 1000 AD, then 2000 AD.  Remember the Y2K scare?  Some Christians thought the end would be May 21, 2011.  According to Christian teachings, the end could not have come until the restoration of Israel.  That finally happened 2500 years after it was predicted, May 14, 1948.  The next day, May 15, Israel was attacked by numerous Arab Islamic countries. It’s still going on today.

There is hysteria about December 21, 2012, but there should be rejoicing at what is really soon to happen.  The predicted Messiah was to come once as a “lamb” and then return at a later date as a "lion".  I think I hear roaring on the horizon.

Note from the editor:  Mr. Robb wrote this article last week and titled it "Ten More Shopping Days Until The End". Unbeknownst to either author, Jack wrote one the same day.  Coincidence?  No.  Great minds just think alike.  Thank you Jerry for sharing your perspective.
