Zombie Anti-Zionism
Israel - Middle East
Friday, August 23, 2013
Alf Cengia

The world 'should be' watching in dismay as Egypt slides precariously towards the precipice of the same abyss that Syria has dropped into. Yet I'm still reading the usual nonsense relating to the reasons why one particular Middle East problem has never been resolved.

This lingering problem has managed to stump the very best of political and diplomatic intercessors, including Bill Clinton and the United Nations. There aren't any prizes for guessing what it is, and that Christian Zionists are the reprehensible culprits behind putting obstacles in the way of peace.

That obstacle is said to be the support of Israel's existence. The revised version of this story has it that Israel is a land-grabbing Apartheid Jewish State, and that politically canny Zionists misinterpret Scripture in their fanatical zeal for bringing on Armageddon.

The following offering was written by activist Anglican priest Stephen Sizer in his blog titled Christian Zionism: The New Heresy that Undermines Middle East Peace:

"Christian Zionism as a modern theological and political movement embraces the most extreme ideological positions of Zionism. It has become deeply detrimental to a just peace between Palestine and Israel. It propagates a worldview in which the Christian message is reduced to an ideology of empire, colonialism and militarism. In its extreme form, it places an emphasis on apocalyptic events leading to the end of history rather than living Christ's love and justice today."

He honed in on Tim LaHaye, John Hagee and Pat Robertson as being leading offenders responsible for the propagation of the Zionist heresy that is anathema to the Palestinian people. It's the customary spiel one reads from anti-dispensationalist writers, with the exception that Darby and Scofield didn't get a mention this time.

The article appeared immediately prior to news items covering the latest Egyptian civilian clashes where Sizer acknowledges attacks on Egyptian churches and the Bible society. The irony appeared to be lost on him - but the Egyptian crisis was never his focus. Soon enough, he got back the really important business by reporting on Nigel Kennedy's use of the word "Apartheid" [referring to Israel], during a BBC music festival.

So much for the suffering Egyptian church! It's a pity that the likes of Nigel Kennedy and his friends aren't nearly so diligent in addressing humanitarian tragedies occurring in Egypt, Syria and Africa.

There are many manifestations of, and reasons for, anti-Zionism. But the crux of it boils down to a deep-rooted despising of what the Jew represents for the anti-Zionist. This attitude has infected many professing Christians. It is a canker that rots the mind and the heart, turning its victims into Zombie-like anti-Semites void of objectivity regarding Israel and the Jewish people. Their focus is set and reason cannot deter them.

Israel is inexorably linked to the Land and God's stated Plan for that nation. Yet the supersessionist church wants to retain its position as the only true Spiritual Israel. To do that it needs to disregard or explain away the plain meaning of significant segments of scripture in both the OT and the NT.

Some of these efforts to do so are patently bizarre. One published and acclaimed Christian M.D. has written on her website:

"The most anti-Semitic group of people on earth are the Jews, themselves. Arabs are of Semitic origin and the majority of Jews appear to hate the Arabs, at least in Israel. The Israeli government’s plan is to annihilate all Arabs in the same way they are “genociding” (sic) the Palestinians..."

And this:

"The rank and file Jews do not understand the true goal of Zionism. They believe, as they are taught, that Zionism is an international movement to secure a homeland for Jews in Palestine. But the BIG Zionist Jews know that the real goal of Zionism is to control the world completely, and to kill or enslave its citizens."

While the above examples are extreme...they're also, sadly, common. What's more, they're indirectly encouraged by the more sober expressions of Christian anti-Zionism which portray Israel as an oppressive land usurper that has lost any God-given promises to the land.

Activist theologian, Gary Burge, is one of these so-called moderates. He prefers to redefine the Old Testament verses relating to future Israel using the "Christian" New Testament. But then he superimposes his theology onto the New Testament by reinterpreting some of its passages relating to Israel (Matt 19:28; Acts 1:6-7, 3:13, 25-26; Rom 11:25-29).

He argues against Israel's right to the land by appealing to its rejection of God and alleged treatment of it's non-Jewish citizens. The latter point is where people like Burge, Sizer and Ateek (Sabeel) foster hatred against Israel and Zionism. Is Israel really an apartheid state that wants to dominate the region? The consistent message these deliver is a resounding, "Yes!" This is despite all the evidence against it.

Yet, if the criteria for enjoyment and possession of the land is rooted in the principle that a nation must believe in God and treat it's foreign citizens fairly, then what can we observe about Israel's neighbors? What about Hamas and the Palestinian Authority? Do these nations accept Christ; treat non-Muslims charitably and as equal citizens? These considerations don't appeal to the single-mindedness of the anti-Zionist.

In contrast to that, why does the Muslim Brotherhood enjoy so much Western support when its proponents have unswervingly called for Israel's destruction and persecute its Christians?

In 2011, Thomas Friedman wrote a column inferring that if democracy didn't take a hold in Egypt, then one could blame Israel's reluctance to embrace the Muslim Brotherhood. In fact Friedman referred to Mubarak as "Pharaoh", and he accused Israel of not wanting to abandon their Pharaoh.

You'd think that hindsight is a wonderful thing. But Muslim Brotherhood supporters still won't get it. The M.B. has always been clear on its intentions towards Israel and in bringing about a Caliphate. It's not that difficult to understand unless you've fallen prey to the Zombie trance that it's all Israel's fault.

We're currently seeing something unique in the recent history of the Middle East. It's as if a Dark Spirit is presiding over the entire region and the bloody face of Islamism is being exposed. How do Syria and Egypt turn back from this, and what does it mean for the rest of the region if they can't? I shamelessly borrow from Ray Bradbury.

"Something Wicked This Way Comes" and we'd better pay attention!

Finally, there's nothing "extreme" in a Zionism that supports Israel's right to exist. All churchmen should carefully ponder the following verses: Zechariah 2:8-9 and Zech 8:7-8.

And a parting word from One Zealous Zionist:

"It shall be in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace and supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn." (Zechariah 12:9-10)
