The Road to Damascus
Israel - Middle East
Thursday, September 12, 2013
J.L. Robb

Most people have heard this term, whether they go to church or synagogue, or not. There have been songs written about this journey. It refers to a trip to Damascus about 2,000 years ago where a guy named Paul finally saw the light, literally. Then unfortunately, he lost his sight in the same instant. It’s an interesting story. Seems that Damascus has been in the news for millennia.

Damascus, the capital of Syria, is one of the world’s oldest and continuously inhabited cities in the world. Carbon dating indicates that the area was inhabited about 9,000 B.C.; and after Damascus was established, it became the scene of civil war and turmoil.

Unlike Jerusalem, Damascus has never been totally destroyed. At least yet.

Thomas Paine, an American author and political activist in the 1700s was a renown atheist which was evident in his writings, ie. Common Sense, The Age of Reason. He ridiculed the belief by some that the prophecies (predictions) in the Bible were true, including the prophecies that had not happened at that time. If the prophecies were true, where was Israel? Israel had been foretold by the Jewish prophets that it would once again be occupied by Jews from all nations, within the ancient boundaries before the final destruction of Israel by Rome around 72 A.D. As Thomas pointed out, it hadn’t happened. If poor Thomas had only lived 200 more years, he could’ve seen it happen.

There is another prophecy that hasn’t happened, this one from 2,700 years ago. Isaiah predicted the total destruction of Damascus, the world’s oldest capital city at that time. Damascus is still the oldest, even today.

Anyone who watches a little news or reads the paper has been hearing a lot lately about Damascus and chemical weapons. The seas around the Syrian capital are rife with foreign navies. Saudi is paying the bad guys (who we support for some reason) to wage war against the other bad guys, and surrounding Saudi allies have released nearly 2,000 prisoners to fight against Syrian President-Dictator Bashar Assad. That’s understandable since the Muslim world even hates each other. Saudi and the rebels are Sunni Muslims; Syria and Iran are Shi’ite Muslims. This hatred and killing of one another was outlined in Genesis.

Take a look at the Arab Islamic world today where every nation is either at war or on the verge, at war with themselves: Egypt, Libya, Algeria, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Sudan. The stable (wink wink) countries like Saudi, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE and Jordan are worried about civil unrest.

Israel is surrounded by countries at war, countries that are killing their own but with a common interest, destroy Israel. Ain’t gonna happen!

This is what Isaiah had to say:

A prophecy against Damascus:

“See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins. The cities of Aroer will be deserted and left to flocks, which will lie down, with no one to make them afraid. The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, and royal power from Damascus; the remnant of Aram will be like the glory of the Israelites,” declares the Lord Almighty. (Isaiah 17: 1-3 NIV)

Isaiah, still speaking in the first person for God, had this prediction about Egypt, a land in near turmoil:

“I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian- brother will fight against brother,    neighbor against neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom. The Egyptians will lose heart, and I will bring their plans to nothing; they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, the mediums and the spiritists. I will hand the Egyptians over to the power of a cruel master, and a fierce king will rule over them,” declares the Lord, the Lord Almighty. (Isaiah 19: 2-4)

Is that happening?

Psalm 83 also discusses the coming war against Israel, written by King David, described as a man after God’s won heart.

O God, do not remain silent; do not turn a deaf ear, do not stand aloof, O God. See how your enemies growl, how your foes rear their heads. With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish. “Come,” they say, “let us destroy them as a nation, so that Israel’s name is remembered no more.”

The world of Islam may appear in disarray, but don’t be fooled. They are a major act in the final scene.

Revelation discusses all the Christians in the final scene who are beheaded (not hung, not shot, not gassed) because they will not adhere to the religion of the anti-Christ. These folk are given an opportunity: convert or be beheaded.

Is this happening today?

According to an article by Danna Wasson,

Mother Agnes Mariam el-Salib is a Catholic nun and Mother Superior of St. James Monastery in Qara, Syria, and has lived in the country for over twenty years.

Just this week, she told Reuters about a rebel attack that occurred a few days ago.

“In the village of Estreba, they massacred all the residents and burnt down their houses. In the village of al-Khratta almost all the 37 locals were killed. Only ten people were able to escape.”

She continues,

“A total of twelve Alawite villages were subjected to this horrendous attack. That was a true slaughterhouse. People were mutilated and beheaded. There is even a video that shows a girl being dismembered alive—alive!—by a frame saw. The final death toll exceeded 400, with 150 to 200 people taken hostage. Later, some of the hostages were killed, their deaths filmed.”

According to eyewitnesses, The Daily Mail reports,

“Terrified Christians claim Syrian rebels ordered them to convert to Islam on pain of death when they ‘liberated’ their ancient village. One Maaloula resident said the rebels, many of whom had beards and shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ (that’s the only religious phrase they apparently know) attacked Christian homes and churches shortly after moving into the village.”

A report yesterday out of Egypt declares an ultimatum from the Islamic “rebels” to the Coptic Christians: Convert to Islam or “pay a jizya tax as indicated in Koran 9:29.”

The jizya tax can be in the thousands of dollars, and Islamic countries that offer this tax to Jews and Christians who won’t convert also means they can’t drive, vote and have limited job potential. Kind of like paying the slave master to be a slave.

Anyone who has ever read the Book of Revelation at least twice can immediately recognize what’s going on. I don’t think the world is listening though. Too much Entertainment Tonight, NFL, America’s Got Talent and soccer going on. The unimportant stuff in the whole scheme of things.

In Revelation, John has a vision as he looks up to heaven:

“I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God…” (Revelation 20:4)

The souls of those who had been beheaded because of their belief that Jesus is who He said He was.
