Some recent headlines: ''Brain-eating'' amoeba found in St. Bernard Parish water supply following death. - CBS News (September 13, 2013).

''Drug-resistant 'superbugs' deemed urgent threats, CDC says.'' - FOX News (September 16, 2013).

STDs on the increase:

"Rates of sexually transmitted diseases are increasing, especially among some groups. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control finds chlamydia infections increased 8% from 2010 to 2011. Reported gonorrhea infections rose 4%. Young adults and gay and bisexual men were particularly affected. Both sexually transmitted diseases can lead to serious health problems, like infertility in women, if left untreated." - KSBY, December 12, 2012

  • Yosemite forest fires unprecedented
  • Colorado floods unprecedented
  • Tsunami deaths unprecedented

One doesn’t need to look far in today’s news to find the word unprecedented. It seems to be everywhere, whether discussing modern-day drought, flood, fire, tsunami, starvation, earthquake, disease or pollution. Unprecedented is the word du jour.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report yesterday, September 17, 2013 stating that 23,000 people die each year in the United States from infectious diseases that are resistant or immune to today’s existing antibiotics. The most difficult to control is a nasty little superbug named c.difficile (as in difficult). Of course there are other resistant bugs. MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus) is also prevalent, once confined to the hospital environment.

According to a doctor interviewed by FOX News, new antibiotics aren’t being produced because there isn’t enough money in it. For the most part, there haven’t been many antibiotic innovations since the ‘50s. They just call the same drugs different names.

Last week a brain-eating amoeba killed a four year old child, five miles outside New Orleans in St. Bernard Parish. Primary amebic meningoencephalitis is the resulting disease, caused only by the fowleri strain.

Discovered in 1965, the amoeba Naegleria fowleri is not uncommon; and under the right conditions it can be ingested through the nasal passages (this disease can only be contracted, according to science, through inhalation).

The child was visiting and is believed to have inhaled the amoeba while playing on a Slip ‘n Slide. The amoeba was also found in the drinking water, though officials have deemed the water safe to drink.

"The water is safe to drink and there are basic precautions that families can take -- such as chlorinating their pools and avoiding getting water in their noses -- to protect themselves, though infection from this amoeba is very rare," Louisiana state health officer Jimmy Guidry said in a press release.

Uhhh, no thanks, Jimmy. You first.

The disease is deemed to be rare, thank goodness! The amoeba, once inhaled, begins to multiply like amoebae do. When conditions aren’t right, the bug is dormant. When conditions are right, the bug multiplies, and multiplies, and multiplies. Once it gets to this form, the amoeba begins feeding. Use your imagination on that one.

Not unprecedented but rare.

The floods last week in Colorado were unprecedented. A week later, there are still 300 missing. Entire towns are now islands, roads in and out of town washed away. Officials say it may be years before things are functioning properly.

The forest fires in California and other parts of the western United States are unprecedented. According to Jay Miller, Senior Wildland Fire Ecologist with the U.S. Forest Service.

“If you ask most of the fire ecologists working in the Sierra Nevada, they would call this unprecedented.” - USA Today, September 18, 2013

In the last decade, starting with the Indonesian Tsunami of 2004, death and destruction caused by tsunamis (they used to be called tidal waves, mistakenly), earthquakes and floods have been unprecedented.

The Bible talks a lot about unprecedented stuff. When Revelation mentions plague, pestilence, starvation and a hotter-than-normal-sun, it is speaking of unprecedented events, like the Great Earthquake, described in a book written more than 2,000 years ago, as unprecedented.

"Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake." Revelation 16:18 NIV

Does that sound like unprecedented?

The discounters, the unbelievers say earthquakes, floods and disease have always been around, there’s “nothing new under the sun.” They need to add "yet."

When Revelation and other prophetic books of the Bible… I’m talking prophecy here, not Nostradamus… claim there will be these earth-shaking events happening in the “last days,” Revelation is not referring to the normal everyday events of nature. It is talking about Divine events.

The last days are described as a time of unprecedented torment for anyone having to live through them, so people have a tendency to ignore the story, as if it really won’t happen. They proclaim the Bible as inerrant, except for “that part.” Revelation is too scary. I hear that all the time, and it’s true. Hollywood has never produced a movie that shows this story. I’m not sure it could be produced on film in a way that the real thing would be superseded.

In 1918-1919, an estimated 50 million were killed from the Spanish Flu. A disease discovered in the early 1980s, HIV AIDS has killed 2 million with 25 million infected. Sexually transmitted disease is rampant and new STDs seem to be discovered on a regular basis.

Unprecedented forest fires are happening throughout the world. According to scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research:

"Large wildfires in the western United States can pump as much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in just a few weeks as cars do in those areas in an entire year, a new study suggests.

As forest fires devour trees and other plants, they release the carbon stored in the vegetation into the atmosphere."

Scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of California used satellite observations of fires and a computer model to estimate just how much carbon dioxide is released based on the amount of vegetation that is burned. The results of the study are detailed in the online journal Carbon Balance and Management.

There’s a lot of unprecedented stuff going on, from disease to flood to fires to starvation. But the world-wide trend is people getting away from God, many church and synagogue memberships are diminishing and so many seem to be intrigued with themselves.

"Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man.” Luke 17:26 NIV

About 5,000 years ago, the people weren’t paying much attention to detail either. Then it started raining.

We can look forward to more unprecedented. And buy an umbrella.
