Choosing Sides
Israel - Middle East
Tuesday, November 26, 2013
Wendy Wippel

My full day of college football (important to me, BTW. Go Bucks!) was interrupted Saturday by the announcement that an "historic agreement" had been reached between several world powers and Iran. Basically a global game of dodgeball, with Israel not picked for either side. (Despite the fact that they were center court.)

The agreement, wherein Iran agreed to freeze certain aspects of its nuclear program in return for about seven million dollars in sanction relief, was met with mixed reaction.  Kerry, calling it a 'historic agreement", opined that the freeze was better for Israel than Iran's ongoing rush toward full capability. Israel observed that a slow leak results just as inevitably in a flat as a fast one.

But the ongoing apathy of the White House with the respect to the odds against Israel bear notice.

Israel, on one end of the field, is a nation of barely eight million people (nearly a quarter of them Arab) living in barely 8000 square miles. Its Muslim neighbors, on the other end of the field occupy 8,300,000 square miles and number 1.5 billion people (all within marching distance of Jerusalem). The odds against Israel demand recognition of the root issue. Israel's right to exist.

Most of those 1.5 billion neighbors believe very strongly that it has none.

The percentage of Muslims who believe (like President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran) that Israel should be "wiped off of the map", when surveyed, ranged  from 90% in Morocco to a minimum of 60% in Pakistan and Indonesia. In fact, even 62% of Israel's Arab citizens (more than 1,000,000 strong) expressed the same feelings.

Sharmine Narwani, writing for Alakhbar in an article entitled "Excuse me, but Israel has No Right to Exist", exposed the typical Muslim sentiment, saying that the "group-think" notion expressed as being self-evident in some discussions of the Palestinian problem;

"has led us nowhere. It has obfuscated, distracted, deflected, ducked, and diminished, and we are no closer to a satisfactory conclusion…because the premise is wrong."

The erroneous premise being that Israel has a right to exist. Narwani went on:

"There is no fixing this problem. This is the kind of crisis in which you cut your losses, realize the error of your ways and reverse course." Israel is "a failed experiment", Narwani said.

"Israel is the problem", she said.

She has lots of company. A recent British survey revealed that the UK population rates Israel as the country least deserving of international respect, and as one of the world's "least democratic countries". Ireland  has been called the world's most anti-semitic country.

The United States, in fact, for some years  now had been the only country to hold a largely positive view of Israel, and just barely, at 51%.

Most of Europe is in single digits (i.e., Germany ( 8%) and Spain (4%.).  And it gets worse. Japan comes in at just 3%.

The problem, no surprise: the supposed mistreatment by Israel of the Palestinians.

Where does that come from?

The liberal media.

The Palestinian Authority has systematically, for years, represented Israel as the aggressor and oppressor in the region, and not surprisingly, Arab journalists echo those sentiments, calling Israel a "Zionist cancer growth", "a malignant disease', "worm-infested wood", and "worse than smallpox". One Palestinian Authority news broadcast called Satan "Zion with a tail".

Liberal western journalists repeat the sentiments, if not the exact verbiage, to Western audiences. Where hard evidence is lacking, they have to manufacture it in order to sell their version of Israeli aggression.

The "Vulture Club", a group of prominent journalists and some "human rights" activists were accused a few years back of using film production tricks to produce "live footage" of Israeli soldiers killing a Palestinian child.

It was staged. The incident never really happened. And it wasn't the only time that film (i.e. the film-makers-- lied).  The end justify the means, because everybody knows that Israel is the aggressor. Why? Because everyone knows. Iran doesn't sugar-coat it. They say what a lot of the world thinks. Israel has to go:

  • Ahmadinejad, October, 2005: Israel "must be wiped off the map."
  • Ahmadinejad, June 2008: Israel "will soon disappear off the geographical domain."
  • Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, February, 2012:  Israel is a "cancerous tumor that should and will be cut."
  • Major General Hassan Firouzabadi, May 2012: "the Iranian nation is standing for its cause--that is, the full annihilation of Israel."

The US, and some other western nations, typically renounce these kinds of statements. But the single-digit levels of support for Israel and the conspicuous absence of any teeth to the verbal rebuttals of such  malevolent pronouncements by Iranian officials reveal the implicit agreement with Iran held by much of the world with respect to the fundamental question: does Israel have a right to exist?

A European poll, not too long ago, found that Europeans viewed Israel as the biggest threat to peace in the world. That would be ahead of both Iran and North Korea. And the most recent poll of the US population showed that support for Israel had just this year fallen to less than 50%.

Which makes it unanimous. The world, for the most part, hates Israel.

And the world, for the most part, waits for its demise.

Which brings up a very interesting passage in Micah, in which this exact development is predicted. It describes a specific moment during the tribulation, in which God tells Israel that,

"Now also many nations have gathered against you, Who say, “Let her be defiled, And let our eye look upon Zion.” (Micah 4:11 NKJV)

The nations gather against Israel, and they express the desire, now voiced only by Iran, but shared by much of the rest of the world, to see Israel destroyed.

"Let her be defiled, and let our eye look upon Zion."

What they won't realize until too late is that they backed the wrong horse.

Israel, the passage goes on to record (in advance) will not be defiled. It will not be wiped off the map:

"But they do not know the thoughts of the Lord, Nor do they understand His counsel; For He will gather them like sheaves to the threshing floor. “Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion; For I will make your horn iron, And I will make your hooves bronze; You shall beat in pieces many peoples." (Micah 4:12-13)

And, finally, the passage records in advance, the Messiah will rule from Jerusalem. Finally, the Lord reigns:

"It shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the Lord’s house Shall be established on the top of the mountains…For out of Zion the law shall go forth, And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem."

Amen.

God promised Mary that her son would rule on the throne of David, and that hasn't happened yet!

And God is not a man, that He should lie. And as the nations circle the wagons around Israel in words, if not yet in armies, we have at least one sure directive:

"Look up, for our redemption draweth nigh."
