Thanksgiving Day
In Defense of the Faith
Thursday, November 28, 2013
J.L. Robb

''Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare.  They are consumed in twelve minutes.  Half-times take twelve minutes.  This is not coincidence.'' ~ Erma Brombeck

I got up this morning at 4:30 like I usually do, milked the cows… just kidding. I am thankful today that I don’t have to milk cows. I ran away from home when I was 16 and went to stay with Uncle Joe on his dairy farm in Alabama for the summer. Ever had a cow step on your foot? They’re really heavy.

One of the first things I do at 4:30 A.M. is check Internet news sources to make sure we’re still here. Things seem to happen fast sometimes; and while I sleep, Israel and Iran could go to war. The threats make war seem imminent. Some news correspondents say this war will happen; but of course, this was predicted by Jewish prophets thousands of years ago. Iran is the Persia of old, and they have not always hated Israel. The advent of Islam caused this hatred. I am thankful today that I, and my family, do not live in a country ruled by Islam where I would have to idolize “the prophet” and worship Allah, who at one time was the Moon god according to history.

The first story that really struck me this Thanksgiving morning was a story on FOX News about an atheist group who was boycotting the baby Jesus. I almost spilled my coffee when I heard this “breaking news.” That seems to be the oxymoron of all oxymorons. Atheists Boycotting Jesus. Is that a surprise?

I am thankful today that I live in a country where people can make these unenlightened, ludicrous claims and insult God without everyone rioting and beheading. I say unenlightened only as it relates to God, because the friends I have that aren’t believers are enlightened about many other things; and I hope to help them find the most important enlightenment of all, that God is not mythology. That is the enlightenment of all enlightenments.

The first Thanksgiving happened in the fall of 1621 when the Pilgrims shared dinner with the Wampanoag Indians. The Pilgrims were thankful to God that they made it safely from Europe and had made it through the previous year. Times were tough back then; and unlike today, almost every person in the new territory held strong religious beliefs. There were very few unbelievers. That’s the way it seems to be when times are tough.

Often I read how “pleased” the Founding Fathers would be with our current state of affairs. The Founding Fathers would be invigorated to see how the separation of church and state has been applied. It’s as though these sources believe that the Founding Fathers were unbelievers. That could not be further than the truth.

President George Washington was the first President to declare a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1789, though Thomas Jefferson thought the idea silly.

"Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to "recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness." ~ President George Washington

Then in 1863, as the Civil War was killing many, Abraham Lincoln declared that Thanksgiving Day would be celebrated every year.

"They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People." ~ President Abraham Lincoln

This past week, the United States and others finalized an agreement with Persia the Bully and agreed to remove some of the “sanctions” if Iran would just promise not to build their Bomb and destroy Israel, who was once our closest ally in the area, and possibly the world. The Bible plainly stated that the “world” would turn against Israel, “all the nations.” I never thought I would live to see that day, but here it seems to be happening. We are supporting nations that want to bomb Israel into non-existence, nations that want the land of Israel as their own, even though it was God who stated that Israel would come back into existence. And that happened in 1948.

Why are we helping Iran to destroy Israel? I am not thankful for that.

Iran is holding three  United States citizens as hostages, kidnapped and imprisoned, one a pastor, Saeed Abedini. Though Islam makes the claim to believe in the God of Abraham, it was the God of Abraham who outlawed kidnapping, judging the crime worthy of death. If it’s one thing Iran is good at, it’s kidnapping Christians. It there’s one thing our government has become good at, it’s betraying our allies.

I am not thankful that our President didn’t at least tie the reduced sanctions to the release of these three innocent Americans. The pastor is locked up for teaching about Jesus. Imagine that.

While there is much to be thankful for today, let’s be thankful we aren’t a Christian or Jew enduring the hardships of living in a country where the population wants to exterminate you.

Please pray for Pastor Saeed Abedini, retired FBI agent Robert Levinson, 65; and Amir Hekati, a 29-year-old former U.S. Marine who has been jailed in Iran since 2011, accused of being a CIA spy.

"Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy. Acknowledge that the Lord is God! He made us, and we are his. We are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; Go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, And his faithfulness continues to each generation." Psalm 100

I'm Not a TurkeyI will pray that Jesus doesn’t boycott the atheists. They know not what they do.

Happy Thanksgiving to all! Be thankful you’re not a turkey. Gobble gobble!
