Auld Lang Syne
Commentary on the News

J.L. Robb

I am so proud of myself!! So far I’ve kept both New Year’s resolutions. Well, if I don’t count dessert last night. But it was a holiday and doesn’t count.

I don’t usually go out on New Year’s Eve, but this year I made an exception when the neighbor across the street invited me over for New Year’s Eve, along with some neighbors. I figured I probably wouldn’t get lost since it was right across the street, so why not?

I did make it home about 9:30 (only got lost once) but didn’t stay awake until midnight, as hard as I tried. I got a couple of calls and texts about 11:59 PM from people who knew darn well I wasn’t awake; but at 11:59, I was because my phone kept making all these sounds. I’m glad, in retrospect, that I woke up to the sound of the song:

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne ?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

In most English speaking countries, Auld Lang Syne is the celebratory song at midnight, New Year’s Eve. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of another song, Thanks for the Memories, a favorite of mine, especially when performed by Rosemary Clooney.

Auld Lang Syne was a poem written by the Scotsman, Robert Burns, in 1788. I am absolutely sure that Robert had no idea his poem would become world renown. It’s a great song to start the New Year, and basically means, “times gone by” or “for old time’s sake.” Kind of like thanks for the memories of the past year, a time to forgive and forget and be thankful.

Are you thankful for the previous year? Was 2013 a good year in world history?

It was a monumental year for the LGBT community in the United States, as gays can now celebrate a new alternate life style.

In a single year, the United States, once the largest Christian population in the world, has overcome the early Pilgrimish ways of the Founders and legitimized gay troops, boy scouts and marriage.

The Parade of Roses was the brainstorm of some marketing folk in 1890 to promote California as the “Mediterranean of the West.” In the history of the Rose Bowl Parade on January1 each year, there have been only two marriages. This year, the 2014 parade featured two men getting married on a parade float, the first gay marriage. What a milestone. How progressive our society has become, so inclusive. The interesting part was the sponsorship of the float by an HIV support organization. Are you listening God? Are You impressed?

In Europe there are calls for abortions up to the age of 4 years old.

Parents should be allowed to have their newborn babies killed because they are “morally irrelevant” and ending their lives is no different to abortion, a group of medical ethicists linked to Oxford University has argued. ~ The Telegraph

Across the world antibiotic resistant bacteria is eating brains of children and necrotizing fasciitis eats the body. Where did these bacteria come from? What has made them so prevalent? What will we do when they are totally resistant to present-day treatment?

In the Philippines, Super Typhoon Haiyan killed an estimated 10,000 people and left millions homeless. It was the strongest storm to make landfall in recorded history, unprecedented. Scientists blame global warming, at least the ones who don’t want to lose credibility.

Yet in the Antarctic, where it’s the summer and warmest temperatures of the year, a Russian tourist ship sits stuck in ten-foot ice, stranded. Two icebreakers have failed to get through the ice because it is so thick, and one icebreaker may now be stuck too. This is Antarctica that recently set a world cold temperature record, 136 below zero (Fahrenheit).  Global warming is to blame, of course.

The U.S. and Canada have had more record low temperatures in 2013, yet government climatologists around the world say it was the 4th warmest year on record.

In 2013, the United States continued its demilitarization by firing thousands more troops, pulling out of Iraq where we sacrificed young men and women, for what? We could’ve just let Saddam Hussein continue to kill his people. The generals asked for 40,000 troops to secure Afghanistan, but the President, a military scholar for sure, gave them 25% less. As a result, record numbers of U.S. Navy SEALs have been killed, as well as other special forces. More U.S. and NATO troops have been killed in Afghanistan than ever before, in the last 5 years.

In the paper last week, ending up 2013, the U.S. government has decided to turn the MRAPs into scrap metal, too expensive to bring back and too sophisticated to leave with the Afghanis. MRAPs (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles) were credited for saving 40,000+ lives because of their design, the U.S. spent billions rushing the $600,000.00 vehicle into production; but now I guess we will never need them again. Does this mean we are no longer planning to protect ourselves? Prepare for the Islamic takeover.

Was 2013 a good year? Seems like a lot of unprecedented bad stuff happened. The Bible predicts that in the last days, man will fall far from God, like in the time of Noah. Is man doing that? Modern civilization seems to believe that God got it wrong, and the rules need to be rewritten.

In closing out the year and starting a new one, in some ways it was a great year for God. He got the company of Jack Kinsella, and I am sure He is being entertained. For those who have no interest in the predictions of the Bible, the Prophecies of the last days, you may not know of Jack Kinsella, but he was one-of-a-kind. I thank God that I had the opportunity to meet this fine man. I just wish I had known him longer, because we would’ve become great longtime friends.

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream,
From morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
And give me a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

Jack Kinsella, thanks for the memories.

Happy New Year.
