Terror - Islam

Coming to a workplace near you: ''Cultural Competency'' training, where the current national sacraments, ''tolerance'' and ''diversity'' are celebrated (meaning mandated) in the workplace context. No arguments there. But in the real world, some things shouldn’t be tolerated. And appreciating diversity isn’t just about black/white; gay/straight. It’s recognizing that there’s good, but there’s also evil.

We now live in a society, at least here in the United States, where to even suggest that anything is morally wrong somehow makes you a “hater”. Sexist. Racist. Homophobic. Judgmental. A narrow-minded fascist bigot.

Merely hinting that marriage was intended to be the union of a man and a woman can get you labeled as a hate group, as it did recently at Camp Shelby in my current state of residence, Mississippi.

Despite the fact that, from a design perspective, that particular combination should be self-evident.

Shouldn’t it?

But today it’s considered intolerant, even hateful to say so.

I think it was G. K. Chesterton that once observed that,

“Tolerance is the virtue of a man without convictions.”

And convictions, at least those derived from the Judeo-Christian scripture that have formed the basis for western ethics, are rapidly being discarded.

I remember reading an article maybe 10 years ago in which a Christian pastor lamented the fact that Biblical standards of morality (though at that time still largely considered a valid standard), were being increasingly dismissed as a way of life.  He also prophesied that it would get worse in the years to come, that the Biblical standards of morality that had been part of the fabric of American culture would soon be rejected as standards at all.

Welcome to Main Street USA, 2014!  Millennials opt for “Beta marriages” (trial marriages that will be easy to vacate if and when the urge hits). Naked reality shows air on TV.

Tolerance and diversity are our idols, and “live and let live” our religion.

Accept when it comes to Christians. Not only are Biblical morals largely abandoned, Christians who embrace them are considered idiots or worse. (My National Geographic this month included a scathing comment from a reader on what a destructive an influence all those Duggar kids are going to be for our poor mistreated planet.)

But the problem here goes even deeper, and it starts at the top.

Our lack of convictions stem from the fact that we, as a society, don’t really believe in evil anymore at all.

Starting at the top.  A Barna poll revealed that 2/3 of American Christians don’t even really believe that the devil exists.

Yep. American Christians.  And since American Christians are pretty much religious fanatics compared to the rest of the western world, if we don’t believe in the devil as a literal sentient supernatural being, I think we’re pretty safe in assuming that most of the rest of the western world doesn’t either.

That’s a problem. When you don’t believe in the devil, it’s just one small step to dismissing the concept of evil as an inherent quality. And when evil doesn’t exist, then (because there is no absolute standard of morality) sin doesn’t exist, and then nobody can be considered responsible for their own actions.

That attitude has created tremendous pressure on American resources, as the majority of the population now depends on the minority to clothe, feed, and pay for their medical treatment. (But they can’t be held responsible to be responsible, because they are just a victim of their circumstances.)

That’s also a problem. Not nearly as urgent as the one developing now.  ISIS.

I agree, it’s high time we “appreciate” diversity. Appreciate that is, in the Webster meaning of the word: “the quality or state of having many different forms, ideas” and “the state of having people who are different races or cultures in a group.”

The group being planet earth, and the different forms and ideas forms being, in this case, The ISIS form of radical, violent Islam.

President Obama once stated,

“The phrase jihad has a lot of meaning within Islam and is subject to a lot of different interpretations, but I will say that … Islam is one of the world’s great religions. More than a billion people practice Islam and an overwhelming majority view their obligations to a religion that reaffirms peace, fairness, tolerance. I think all of us recognize that this great religion in the hands of a few extremists has been distorted by violence.”

Meanwhile his administration has consistently avoided using terrorism in any context that suggests Islamic involvement, and Obama himself has asserted that on his watch no acts of terrorism have occurred on American soil.

Which dismisses the 2013 Boston Marathon attack (hundreds wounded) the horrific event which unfolded in Benghazi (four dead and dozens injured and the 2009 attack at Fort Hood (13 dead and 30 injured).

Despite the fact that Nadal Hasan, before shooting dozens of fellow soldiers at Ford Hood, shouted ‘Allah Akbar’ 11 times (coincidence?)  and has subsequently expressed a sincere desire to be released to fight alongside his ISIS brethren in the faith.

Nonetheless, the Fort Hood shootings are still classified by this administration as “workplace violence”,  and Janet Napolitano made it official policy to call future acts of terrorism as “man-caused disasters”.

A man-caused-disaster, to me, is accidentally causing a forest fire. It’s a far cry from decapitating toddlers and impaling their heads in a Mosul Park.

So I say let’s take a minute to appreciate diversity, specifically by recognizing its existence. Evil exists, and some ideologies are evil. And when evil exists, intolerance is not only appropriate, it’s imperative.

God said, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil (Isaiah 5:20).  The two are utterly reconcilable (no matter how many word games are played), and all of us have to choose which side of the line we want to fall on.  You can’t appease evil, and you can’t manage it. It seeks always to devour.

Obama also said once that ,

“America and Islam are not exclusive and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles of justice and progress, tolerance and the dignity of all human beings".

I think only one side there thinks we’re not in competition.  Which reminds me of an incident in Fiddler on the Roof (an awesome musical) in which the idealistic and very liberal young man Perchik tells the hardworking Tevye, father of five daughters, that,

“In this world it is the wealthy who are criminals. Someday their wealth will be ours.”

Tevye’s response?

“That would be nice. If they would agree, I would agree.”

It’s that pesky diversity thing  again. They don’t agree that we can live mutually in peace. Their worldview, based on their understanding of the Islamic religion, is that whole world should be living under Shaaria law and subjugated to the “Religion of peace”.

The one that cuts toddlers in half. Or beheads them. That includes hunting down of members of different ethnic and religious groups, systematically assassinating the men and boys, and raping the women and girls before selling them into sexual slavery. The one that has created more than 500,000 child refugees, using some of them for suicide bombings.

The one that has killed, in a few short months, an estimated 200,000 people, wreaking havoc so heinous that Amnesty International issued a report called "Ethnic Cleansing on Historic Scale”.  Most of those killed were Christians, making it a good bet that 2014 will surpass 2013’s all-time record of most Christians martyred in modern history.

It was a very wise man (Edmund Burke) who once observed,

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

That’s the problem. You can’t extend tolerance to those who would obliterate it. If you do, both you and the tolerance you extended will be promptly extinguished.

We need to pray for our leaders. We need to;

“Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil". (I Thessalonians 5:21-22)

That’s our battle cry.

Particularly as the lines get blurred and the stakes get higher.
