Prophecy - Signs

Graven images apparently were quite important to God. Important enough to be one of the Ten Commandments. Actually important enough to be in the Top Two.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Exodus 20:4 KJV (Second Commandment)

It seems that King James added graven in his translation, because translations closer to the actual Greek indicate the quote should have been images, instead of graven images. Graven seems logical to me. Graven means carved, engraved or sculpted according to current dictionaries.

In Hebrew, graven image literally meant idol, something God was very much against. He made plain to the Children of Israel that no idols of foreigners were allowed in Israel. That included Molech and Asherah poles, both graven images that foreigners bowed to, talked to, worshipped and actually expected something to happen, something godly. Of course, the Israelites, as stubborn as they were, paid no attention to God’s requirement as though it was just a request. Often in Israel’s history, graven images existed throughout the land. Often the Israelites have paid a grave price.

A graven image is a physical image of something that people bow down to and worship.

When Catholics go into the sanctuary, they kneel toward a graven image of a likeness of Jesus on the cross; but they do not worship the image, at least most.

In 2001, the Taliban of Afghanistan decided to rid the world of a couple of graven images from the 5th century B.C., two large statues of Buddha. Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar sent tanks and aircraft to bombard the 2,500 year old statues to smithereens.  It seems Omar considered the images “un-Islamic.”

ISIS/ISIL/Islamic State is the Taliban on steroids, and they find almost every image/statue and painting, un-Islamic, except oil wells which they seem to worship. They apparently consider themselves worthy to define what is and is not, Islamic-looking.

The ruins of the Mosque of Prophet Younis (Jonah) is considered the burial place of Jonah and even has a whale tooth in its décor. Jonah, you remember, was the reluctant prophet who tried to escape his calling to prophesy to the people of Nineveh, fearing for his life. The Jews at that time had a way of killing their prophets, so the calling to prophesy quickly lost any luster it once had.

I am pretty sure were Jonah to appear today in New York and start prophesying to Americans, it would not be pretty. I can hear it now:

“The ways of America are not my ways, says God. I am against abortion, so you must stop. I am against homosexuality, so you must stop. I am against divorce, so you must stop. I am against changing your sex, so you must stop. I am against adultery, so you must stop.”

Prophets usually spoke in the 1st person, as God; and this conversation with Americans, Europeans, Westerners in general could take a long time. Our culture has led us to many lifestyles that are against God’s teaching. We would probably kill Jonah rather than change.

The Tomb of Jonah in the Mosque of Prophet Younis, located in Mosul, Iraq, was one of the most significant mosques in Mosul and also one of the few mosques located in the eastern part of the city. Before it was a mosque it was a church. Invading Muslim armies like to tear down and build on the sight of famous churches or conquests. A 9/11 mosque in New York overlooking the site of where the World Trade Center once stood before its demise at the hands of Islam, would be the same symbol of conquest.

Jonah’s Tomb is no more, unfortunately. Blown up by ISIS on July 25, 2015, the tomb wasn’t considered Islamic enough, even though it had been located in a mosque. But wait! Jonah was a Jewish prophet, so that explains it. Jonah’s Tomb has been removed from history, just as God removed Nineveh from history.

Nineveh was the capital city of the Assyrian Empire and was quite cosmopolitan- and decadent, at least by God’s definition. Modern man seems to be redefining decadence just as we are rewriting history. Nineveh was destroyed in 612 B.C. and the prophets had this to say about the once cosmo city and its future:

  • An “overrunning flood” would “make an utter end of the place” (Nahum. 1:8)
  • Nineveh would be destroyed while her inhabitants were “drunken” (Nahum. 1:10)
  • Nineveh would be unprotected because “the gates of thy land shall be set wide open” and “fire shall devour thy bars” (Nahum. 3:13)
  • Nineveh would never recover, for there “is no healing of thy bruise” (Nahum. 3:19)
  • The downfall of Nineveh would come with remarkable ease, like figs falling when the tree is shaken (Nahum. 3:12)

Nineveh has never been rebuilt, though Saddam Hussein made an attempt. God said it would never happen, and Saddam is dust, like Nineveh. Unbuilt but not forgotten.

ISIS destroyed the Temple of Bel in Palmyra, Syria on August 31, 2015, “one of the best-preserved Roman-era sites in the Syrian city of Palmyra. This historic temple is just the latest piece of history targeted and essentially erased in a show of force by ISIS militants.”

And the beat goes on.

ISIS may believe they are destroying graven images and glorifying God, but they are not. I guess we will figure that out when they invade the West (Islam has done this before) and start destroying un-Islamic images, like the concrete frogs we might have in our gardens, necklaces with dolphins or something else from under the sea, salt and pepper shakers shaped like cows, etc., etc.

The idiocy of their actions lie here: God also is against slavery, sex-slavery, kidnapping, murder, rape and torture; but ISIS does this on a daily basis, all for the glory of Allah. This behavior would not glorify the Jewish God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It would insult Him. They insult Him daily. On Judgment Day, maybe ISIS members will pray for mercy and a heap-load of forgiveness.

In the United States, we are taking similar actions, trying to erase history. Recently the effort to remove every Confederate flag from the face of the planet might erase history, but it is doubtful. Andrew Jackson and Mr. Separation of Church and State, Thomas Jefferson were the apple of the liberal eye, but now their images are being removed because they also owned slaves.

If we erase history, we will continue to repeat it.
