Independence from what?

July 4th in the United States is a time of revelry and a time of introspection. It is a time to ponder the thoughts and motivations of the Founding Fathers. While these men were honorable, they were also flawed like all of us; but as a group, they were brilliant. They kept God and His great gift to mankind in their plan.

Last week I saw a frontpage story comparing President Trump to the Founding Fathers, emphasizing how disappointed they would be in his “failed presidency.” That may be true, but unlike the authors of this article, I do not have the ability to digress 240 years and see what George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin would think about a President who seems to spend a lot of time emphasizing The Almighty and protecting the nation from national thuggery (including media thuggery).

Two years ago when gay marriage became legal in the United States for the first time in history, there were headlines the next day claiming the Founding Fathers would be celebrating if they were alive that day, June 26, 2015. I don’t think so.

Christians (some) were wringing their hands in grief at the moral decline of their beloved country, but the decline did not happen under President Obama nor President Trump. The newest moral decline started shortly after World War II ended and peaked the crest in the late 1960s Sexual Revolution.

Every July 4th, Hobby Lobby buys a full-page ad in numerous newspapers around the country. They do this every Christmas, Easter and Independence Day. The reason that David Green, the founder of Hobby Lobby, started this tradition: He felt the Christmas ads, including Hobby Lobby’s, were all about stuff in which to celebrate Christmas but none of the ads had substance about why Christmas was being celebrated. He accomplished this by publishing the opinions of the Founders and the movers-and-shakers in the early formation of the United States of America.

In reading some of these quotes/opinions, please keep in mind that these were from the same men who wrote the separation of church and state clause. They wrote the clause and then inserted God and Jesus the Christ centrally in the classroom. They wrote the clause but recommended the Bible as the #1 text book. I guess today’s interpreters of that clause (many of whom are atheists) are much more progressive than what the Founders had in mind.

The Founders would not be celebrating the moral breakdown of the country they fought to found. There has always been crime, both secular and moral; but the Founders would not celebrate our interpretations of their ideas of freedom. In their day it was legal to use the Bible as a text book but pornography, prostitution, homosexuality and recreational sex was illegal. Today it is the opposite. How did that happen?

Though some of our Founders had their own issues, Christianity seems to have been the center of their world, with a few exceptions, like Thomas Paine.

How would Trump compare with the Founders? Not sure at this point. It has been only six months. But from reading a few of the quotes (of many) from the Founders, the last two Democratic presidents would be the ones giving the Founders a spin in the grave.

Independence from what?

Independence from tyranny, torture, imposed state religions. Independence for the pursuit of happiness. Independence to speak what is on our mind without the rulers putting us in prison. Independence to worship as we please without guidance from the government.

Apparently the Founders were not seeking independence from God. 

According to CBN: On July 2, 1776, Congress voted to approve a complete separation from England. Two days later, the early draft of the Declaration of Independence was signed. Four days later, members of Congress took the document and read it out loud from the steps of Independence Hall, proclaiming it to the city of Philadelphia, and afterwards they rang the Liberty Bell. The inscription on the top of the bell is Leviticus 25:10, which reads, "Proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all the inhabitants thereof."
