Promises, Promises

We all know the Bible contains lots of God’s promises to His own. At least 3573 actually.(Someone counted). In fact, the word “promise" itself occurs over 50 times in the Bible. There are some verses, I‘m guessing, that just about all of God’s children have struggled with once or twice, when their resources dwindled. Or suddenly deserted them, making giving to the Lord seem like an act of insanity.

I will admit that it took my husband and I awhile to get serious about it. But we have twelve years of faithfulness behind us. And we were privileged just this week to see what God did with one piddlin’ contribution we made.

It all started maybe 12 years ago. Our Pastors had become aware of a need in Guatemala for fresh water, with some Guatemalan children spending most of every day traveling miles to a water source and back. With a capacity to carry; just one day’s supply.

Our Pastors visited the village in Guatemala, and worshipped and prayed and shared ideas with each other, and readied to leave their new friends, with a promise from our church that we would try to help them, and soon!

In the previous week or so of getting to know each other, our Pastors had casually discussed a work in progress at our church in Hernando, Mississippi. A much-needed add-on to our church facility specifically for the youth ministries, named “The Go Center”.

As in, “Jesus commands us to Go”.

And as the goodbying began, one of their deacons presented to our Pastors a collection they had taken up among their congregation. A contribution to the building of the Go Center then in process. A stack of Guatemalan dollars that may well have represented their life savings. It was $36 in US bills. Our pastors accepted it graciously and came home.

That could have been the end of things.

But the friendships formed during the couple of weeks they were in Guatemala continued.

A well was begun. Then a children’s choir formed in Guatemala that was hosted by our church, with opportunities for our members to sponsor children from the villages involved.

Our members sponsored more than 60 Guatemalan children.

I’m still paying (and praying) for my "adopted” child, now a beautiful young lady who loves the Lord and is about to go to college. But when that Guatemalan deacon, collected $36 for our Go Center, neither he or anyone else could have foreseen what God could make out of it.

When the wells started being built, the congregation got excited. And they not only gave to build wells, but they started asking their friends to contribute.

Then they went to their workplaces and asked their companies to make contributions.

Two more wells were built. Mission accomplished. Our Pastor, however, updated us on that location Sunday, as part of a series on what God can do with our offerings.

What He can do with a seed of faith.

When that Guatemalan Deacon took up that offering for our Go Center, he started a chain reaction of faith. We did get our Go Center finished. But God brought blessings back, blessings multiplied far more than anyone could have imagined.

The numbers were added up recently. That $36 gift towards our Go center—essentially the equivalent of the widows two mites- resulted, ultimately—between child sponsorship, wells, corporate donations and those from the congregation, to right around $300,000.

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. Luke 6:37-39

God keeps His promises!\

(And isn’t that a comfort after an evening devoted to politics!)

God makes a lot of promises. And He always keeps the promises He makes.
