Wherefore Art Thou, Sargon?

Wendy Wippel

If you’re like me, you hear the name Sargon and you think of an alien guy that appeared in a Star Trek episode in 1970. Sargon? Sounds like an alien name to me.

In this episode, Kirk and crew answer a distress call and end up beaming down to the planet from which it emanated.  The inhabitants of that world are disembodied brains, who want to experience having bodies again, and eventually hatch a scheme to take over the bodies of the Enterprise Crew. The crew, of course, uncover the plot that these nefarious residents of outer space have hatched, foil it and ride off together into the cosmos.

That lasted until 1977.  When I got saved, and started to read my Bible.

Not sure how long it took me to come across the name of Sargon, but I eventually did, and found out that Sargon was an actual historic personage in his own right.

Not just anybody, either. A king.

And not just a king, but the king of Syria as well as Mesopotamia and parts of Iran, Turkey and Syria.

In other words, a pretty influential dude.

But here’s the weird part. (Or maybe not). As men of science in the 1800’s began to develop and standardize scientific methods for archaeology, the archaeologists involved  rather quickly, began to actually find the remains, or the homes, or the battlefields of important figures in history.

King Tut’s Tomb, the ruins of Pompei, Heinrich Schliemann and the site of Troy. Just to name a few.

Many men and women who figure in the Scriptures followed.

But as years went by and the science and practice of archaeology improved, one biblical figure came to be conspicuously devoid of any extra-biblical proof of his existence.

A guy named Sargon. Who appears in the book of Isaiah Chapter 20:1 in the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod (when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him) and fought against Ashdod, and took it.

But no grave had been found. No monuments. No correspondence. No nothing.

Despite the fact that literally tons of archaeological finds and monuments and inscriptions from Assyria had been found.

And none of them mentioned Sargon.

The celebration didn’t last long.

A French archaeologist named Paul Emile Botta, decided to dig in the then smallish village of Khorsabad. And hit paydirt. He found a completely buried palace, and in this palace he found this inscription:

"I besieged and captured Samaria, carrying off 27,190 of the people, who dwelt therein. Fifty chariots I gathered from among them. I caused others to take their portion. I set my officers over them and imposed upon them the tribute of the former king."

The icing on the cake?  Let’s look at 2 Kings 17:5-6;

Israel Carried Captive to Assyria

"Now the king of Assyria went throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria and besieged it for three years. In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away to Assyria, and placed them in Halah and by the Habor, the River of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes."
