Syria – A Finger in Every Pie

In November 2006 a leading rock star visiting Australia took the then Prime Minister John Howard to task on the subject of donations to third world countries. He was in Australia to promote the Make Poverty History campaign and he wanted Howard to increase aid to 0.7 per cent of Australia’s GDP to developing countries by 2015. It was a noble request, albeit using other people’s money.

Recently, I spent a few days in New York City with my family. One of the guided tours we took was through Central Park and one of the scheduled stops was at the Strawberry Fields memorial for murdered ex-Beatle John Lennon. The memorial is often laden with flowers arranged in the shape of a peace symbol although it wasn't on this occasion.

As far back as I can recall the nation of Israel has fascinated me - initially from an historical viewpoint and later from an eschatological one. It was in Catholic school where I learned it was Israel that received the Old Testament books from God and from which Jesus Christ originated. Of course, I was also taught that Israel rejected the Messiah and that she and the Romans were complicit in crucifying Him. I do remember the nun pointing out that Italians were the descendants of the Romans and feeling suddenly uncomfortable about the fact that I was born in Italy.
