Israel Scrambles to Avoid Showdown With Obama
Israel scrambled Tuesday to sidestep President Barack Obama’s demand for a West Bank settlement freeze with a diluted counteroffer to Washington. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s compromise—to take down some squatter camps in exchange for permission to keep building in established settlements—was quickly rejected by hard-liners in his own coalition.
The dispute underscored Netanyahu’s difficult juggling act. He’s trying to avert a crisis with the U.S. over settlements, while keeping his pro-settlement governing coalition intact and forging ahead with construction, such as the rows of apartment blocks going up in this rapidly expanding Israeli city in the West Bank.
However, Obama and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton have spoken in recent days about halting all settlement activity without exception, suggesting Netanyahu may have little room to bargain.
Clinton: ”We Don’t Know . . .”
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad jarred the world’s nuclear experts with his recent admission that Iran has more than 7,000 working centrifuges, instead of the 3,000 the West was basing all its ‘point of no return’ calculations on.
“We don’t know what to believe about the Iranian program. We’ve heard many different assessments and claims over a number of years,” said Clinton of Iran’s latest claims.
“We do not attribute any particular meaning, with respect to the range of issues that we are looking to address with the Iranians, from this particular statement.”
Given that Iran is now believed to have the capability to mount a nuclear warhead on missiles capable of reaching all the major capitals of Europe, possibly the east coast of the United States and definitely all of Israel, an admission that the US doesn’t know what to believe is troubling, to say the least.
The Bush Legacy: European Socialism
According to the prophecies of both the Old and New Testaments, the coming global government to be headed by antichrist will be headquartered somewhere in the revived Roman Empire. With that in mind, former Clinton advisor Dick Morris’ offers this interesting bit of perspective:
The results of the G-20 economic summit amount to nothing less than the seamless integration of the United States into the European economy. In one month of legislation and one diplomatic meeting, the United States has unilaterally abdicated all the gains for the concept of free markets won by the Reagan administration and surrendered, in toto, to the Western European model of socialism, stagnation and excessive government regulation. Sovereignty is out the window. Without a vote, we are suddenly members of the European Union. Given the dismal record of those nations at creating jobs and sustaining growth, merger with the Europeans is like a partnership with death.
