Comments: 1., so, is microevolution really just adaptation? 2., This discussion about snakes really isn't problematicus to me, because I have encountered more than a few snakes standing on terrasantus supposedly preaching the "Word of God". And it seems their number is growing daily.

This is really weird! I never heard an evolutionary theory that an animal could "evolve" a feature and then change it's mind and dis-evolve it!  I guess with millions or billions of years anything can happen!  Their explanation that maybe the leg(s) grew more slowly and so finally disappeared is also really weird.  What kind of reasoning is that? "Hey my legs are not cooperating with the rest of my body and they are not growing fast enough, think I'll just get rid of them!" It means they really don't know why it happened (if it happened). I read one of the articles about it and had some questions. What they are looking at through X-rays of the fossils are bones inside the animal, not outside, and they are assuming these are dis-evolving legs (no feet or toes remain for them to look at).  Another question, the article said the leg was attached to the snake's pelvis.  Does a snake have a pelvis, and where is it?  At it's tail?  Legs at the tail but none at the front?  I can't think of an animal with only hind legs.  Maybe that was the problem, they forgot to evolve front legs! There was a dinosaur that walked on huge hind legs, but did have tiny arms, which must have been good for something, at least for balance.  And kangaroos of course with hind legs they get around on, and much smaller arms. But a reptile with hind legs and no front legs doesn't seem logical. Some of them are really long, and it seems that hind legs only would be a big detriment to surviving.

Anyway, I also believe the Biblical account and whatever the serpent was, it had legs, and God took them away and made it into a snake, and it didn't take him a billion years to do it!

Very interesting Wendy!

P.S. I just re-read your article and realized I missed that the "growing more slowly and finally disappearing" was their explanation of "how" they dis-evolved their legs, not that their legs grew more slowly so then they decided to dis-evolve them.  Still a predictably silly evolutionary idea.

This is just a fancy of mine but most cultures have myths of dragons. These dragons are usually not nice. I imagine that Satan enticed Eve as a magnificent dragon. God punished the creature by turning him into the serpents we see today. I have no proof of that but I always wondered where all the dragon stories come from. Of course I have no hard evidence of that.
