what an interesting article - i never knew the origin was a pagan festival. valentine was a martyr for his faith - he did not hide it - he lived it by marrying all those couples in defiance of the emperor. thanks for the article.

Thanks for responding. Actually enclosing a lamp, whether incandescent, fluorescent or LED, will shorten the life because of heat generated. Fluorescent do better than incandescent because they put off much less heat. LEDs do even better than the fluorescent and are cooler. Many LED lamps are made for enclosures, like the corn light.

One thing the public is not being informed of are toxins, though slight, are contained within LED lights. Everyone made a huge deal out of mercury in CFL-type lamps, though the mercury content is about 1/100th of the older fluorescent lamps. Also, most lamps except incandescent have mercury. The EPA way overplayed that story.

If buying LED, one complaint is the color of the light. This is determined by a # on the package or lamp. Normal warm white like an incandescent lamp is designated as 2700K-3000K; cool white like fluorescents in most offices would be approx 4000K; daylight white, 5000K.

An LED lamp will outlast 25 standard incandescent lamps and use ony 25% of the energy with same or more light. And the prices are dropping every day.

One other caveat with LED Bulbs, they should not be placed in an enclosed lamp, like a post lamp outside. It will severly shorten the life.

Shelley, by new bulb are you talking about a CFL 9compact fluorescent) or an LED lamp? Poor voltage can affect both lamps but the CFL is much more sensitive It doesn't sound like it would be on a dimmer. Dimmers require dimmable CFLs. If it is a 3-way type lamp with low-medium-high, you would need a 3-way lamp.

Other than that, they should last for many years and the LED even longer. Can you send me the manufacturer's info off the box? jrobb3328@gmail.com

Thanks. There have been so many martyrs, and I think there is getting ready to be a lot more.

Comments: Great article, Jerry. Who knew? Sad, but not surprised to hear the statistics are being manipulated. And you are right - it only matters what God says, not any of us.

Off topic - I read your article on the new light bulbs and have a question. We rent and have been replacing those "new" bulbs in one of our fixtures non-stop. Are there some old fixtures that can just not take the new bulbs? I wanted your opinion before asking that it be replaced. Honestly they are burning out now after about a month! Maybe the fixture is just bad, period. Thanks for your expert opinion!
