You were just a kid when you took that test, and you weren't yet saved. I've got some real cringe-worthy behavior in my past and must confess that the shame still eats at me. Those of us who were entering adulthood in the 60s and 70s were faced with powerful satanic social change and, without a biblical worldview, were ripe for plucking.
As for men choosing their fate? God gives saving faith as a gift to those He pre-determined to do it for before the foundation of the world--and not everyone receives it. When we made a "decision for Christ," we only did so because we were empowered and called by God to do so. Regeneration always comes first. We contributed absolutely zero to the process. Faith is the gift of God, not our contribution towards salvation.
